Pocket Guide: Quepos

Your Hotel Stay in Quepos

Quepos is a town on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, south of the capital San Jose. Visitors fall in love with its picturesque sandy beaches, unspoiled natural wilderness and its many opportunities for adrenaline-fuelled fun. There are many hotel options to suit all budgets along the coast, with a large number in Quepos and the neighbouring towns of El Cerro and Manuel Antonio.

A Coastline of Gold and Silver Sand

The Quepos coastline is studded with some particularly attractive beaches, such as the Playa Matapalo, a beautiful curve of golden sand that is generally uncrowded and suitable for long walks. Turtles land here to lay their eggs, and can be seen by torchlight at night. On hatching days, you can enjoy the spectacle of the turtle hatchlings flapping down to the water. La Playita is another pleasantly peaceful beach, with silver sands and a surf that’s great for bodyboarders and beginner surfers. As with so many of Costa Rica’s beaches, La Playita is closely fringed with greenery that affords views from the water of monkeys, sloths and colourful varieties of birds.

Natural Attractions near Quepos

Within easy reach of Quepos and its neighbouring districts lies Manuel Antonio National Park, a place of splendid rainforests, silver-sanded beaches and coral reefs. The beaches are spectacular, some of the best in Costa Rica. Make the most of the park and take a guided tour with a guide whose experienced eye will help to pick out the fabulous diversity of wildlife, from monkeys and sloths to bats and macaws. Kids Saving the Rain Forest is a wildlife rescue centre that seeks to release rescued wildlife back into its natural habitat and welcomes visitors wanting to say hello to its furred and feathered residents.

Adrenaline-Filled Activities

The Quepos area offers many opportunities to get active, from surfing, bodyboarding and snorkelling along the coast, to such inland adventures as riding ziplines through the rainforest canopy. You can take a horse-riding tour in the Brisas del Nara, try a spot of rapelling down a waterfall precipice, or take to the air for some spectacular skydiving.

Find a three- or four-star hotel to suit you in Quepos and start planning your Costa Rica adventure.
