The best time to go to Purros is during the dry season, from May to October, when wildlife viewing is at its peak and the weather is most comfortable.
During these months, the Purros Conservancy, which encompasses the village and surrounding desert landscapes, experiences clear skies and moderate temperatures, typically ranging from 20°C to 28°C during the day. The reduced water sources in the Hoarusib River and its tributaries draw desert-adapted wildlife, such as elephants, giraffes, and oryx, to the riverbeds, making them easier to spot during game drives.
This period is particularly well-suited for travellers keen on wildlife photography and guided excursions. The dry riverbeds also make for easier driving conditions, which is a significant advantage given the area's remote and rugged terrain. You'll find that many of the local Himba communities are more accessible during this time as well.
Conversely, the wet season, from November to April, brings higher temperatures and the possibility of heavy rainfall, which can make some roads impassable and reduce wildlife visibility due to thicker vegetation.
