Thoroughly enjoyed Islay House. It is the perfect combination of comfort and elegance in a magnificent setting.
The room had beautiful views across Loch Indaal, lovely furnishings and appointments and all the amenities one could need (even reliable Wifi with Internet otherwise apparently often difficult to access on Islay). Beds and linen are super comfortable. The underfloor heating in the bath room makes it very inviting to take a bath in the free standing bath tubs again with views over...

Overall a great hotel where to the good outweighs the negatives. Goods - Food at the restaurant is great, Staff was helpful and friendly and the views were awe inspiring. The not so good, the price at the restaurant was high, the room was very small. Over I would say again.

The facilities were great . Our room was the Hayloft and was fantastic . I would say more like a studio flat with our own kitchen dining and lounge areas . It was very relaxing such a lovely place overall. We chose to have breakfast in the cafe each morning and it was excellent. The staff were very helpful when it came to local eating out for evening meals and things to see and do . I definitely agree with others I would give it a 10 out of 10 and will be back

The best area to stay in Port Ellen is within the town itself, particularly along the waterfront and the main street, Frederick Crescent.
Port Ellen is the second-largest town on Islay and serves as a key arrival point for many visitors, with its ferry terminal connecting to the mainland. The town is compact and easily walkable, with most accommodations, shops, and places to eat situated around the harbour and along Frederick Crescent. You'll find the Port Ellen maltings, a significant landmark, at the end of the bay.
For whisky enthusiasts, staying in Port Ellen is ideal. You're within walking distance of three renowned distilleries: Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg, all accessible via a pleasant coastal path known as the Three Distilleries Pathway. This allows for easy distillery tours and tastings without needing to drive.
Couples looking for a convenient and relaxing base will appreciate Port Ellen. The town offers a selection of guesthouses and hotels, many with views over the bay.
When is the best time to go to Port Ellen?
The best time to visit Port Ellen is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) for pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
During these months, you'll experience milder temperatures, typically ranging from 10-15°C, and a good chance of sunshine, making it comfortable for exploring the island's distilleries and coastal paths. The ferry services are also consistent during these times, and you'll find accommodation and restaurant reservations easier to secure than in the peak summer months.
Couples looking for a peaceful getaway will particularly appreciate the quieter atmosphere of the shoulder seasons. You can enjoy unhurried distillery tours, long walks along the beaches, and cosy evenings in local pubs without the bustle of larger crowds. The changing colours of the landscape in autumn also add to the scenic beauty, great for romantic strolls.
While summer (June to August) offers the warmest weather and longest daylight hours, it's also the busiest. If you prefer a livelier atmosphere and don't mind planning well in advance for everything, summer can still be a good option.
