Port Denarau is the beating heart of the tiny luxury private island of Denarau, just a few minutes’ drive from the town of Nadi on Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu. While yachts line the jetties, with everything from small craft to classic sailboats and vast superyachts, the marina is much more than just a jet-set harbour. Restaurants and shops, cafes and bars, day spas and children’s play areas make it a top tourist destination in its own right. Some of Viti Levu’s fanciest hotels line the Port Denarau waterfront and at the heart of the complex is an international 18-hole golf course.
Denarau was once a mangrove swamp, yet today the island is Fiji’s five-star hub, connected to the mainland by a short bridge. Alongside the luxury hotel resorts are residential villas with staggering sea views. The swanky port is the largest retail and restaurant complex on the west side of the island.
Denarau Island is home to several international brand luxury hotels, so you can take your pick of luxury rooms, upmarket facilities and, of course, magnificent sea views. While the majority of accommodation is in the four- and five-star categories, you will also find a couple of three-star aparthotels, which make excellent family self-catering options.
The port is both a destination in its own right and a jumping-off point to Fiji’s outer islands. A number of tour operators are based here, offering full- and half-day sailing trips around the beautiful coastline, deep-sea fishing trips, snorkeling excursions to pristine reefs and four-wheel-drive adventures. Port Denarau is also the gateway to Fiji’s western islands, and ferries depart from here to the tropical paradises of the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands.
Whether you plan on taking an excursion to other islands or not, it’s still worth spending some time exploring the marina itself. Wander along the jetties among the luxury superyachts, dine in one of the many excellent restaurants, watch the sun go down from a waterfront bar or indulge in a spot of retail therapy before returning to your Port Denarau hotel.
