Pocket Guide: Phang Nga

Phang Nga is a scenic province in the south of Thailand with a stunning coastline and a wealth of national parks to explore. Miles of unspoiled beaches, colourful reefs teeming with marine life and spectacular limestone islets, mountains and rainforests make this a unique holiday destination for beach lovers as well as the more adventurous traveller.

Staying near Phang Nga’s Beaches

Picture-perfect white sandy beaches meet the Andaman Sea to the west of Phang Nga. The beautiful district of Khao Lak is one of the most popular areas with visitors. There are plenty of great restaurants as well as shops, beach bars and activities to enjoy.

You’ll find an excellent variety of hotels in Khao Lak and good transport links to other areas in the region. Phang Nga province also has a number of islands with hotels and rental properties close to the mainland. Just ten minutes by boat takes you to Koh Ko Khao with its tropical landscape and tranquil beaches.

The National Parks of Phang Nga

One of the most impressive things about Phang Nga is the incredible range of national parks to explore. The oldest evergreen rainforest in the world shrouds the mountains of Khao Sok National Park where you’ll find some extraordinary wildlife.

To the south of Phang Nga tidal channels carve through the largest primary mangrove forest in Thailand opening out into Phang Nga Bay. Here the vertical cliffs and limestone karsts jutting out from the sea create a breathtaking landscape. Hardly surprising the area was once used as a film location for James Bond. Kayaking tours will take you through the lagoons and caves of Phang Nga Bay for an unforgettable adventure.

Marine Parks and Diving in Phang Nga

Some of the best diving locations in the world can be found in Phang Nga. Take a 40-mile boat trip from the north west of the region to reach the wild and isolated islands of Ko Surin National Park. The archipelago and its thriving coral reefs attract reef sharks and whale sharks, manta rays and sea turtles. The area is a nature haven and perfect for those just learning to snorkel as well as more experienced divers. Further south, the Similan Islands are also a popular destination for diving.

Luxury Resorts and Budget Hotels in Phang Nga

From sumptuous spa resorts with tropical gardens, fine dining and private beaches to trendy hostels at the centre of the action, there’s accommodation in Phang Nga to suit every budget. Most of the five-star resorts tend to be in Khao Lak or a little further south in Takua Thung, but you’ll find a good range of hotels throughout Phang Nga.

Whether you go for a cabin in the rainforest, a family resort by the beach or a gem of a hotel off the beaten track, there’s plenty accommodation to choose from in Phang Nga. And with so many stunning places to visit, staying in this beautiful location will certainly be a holiday to remember.
