About this property
Cozy Cabin in Heart of Tonto Forest
Just a 90 minute drive from Phoenix in the heart of rim country, you will find this little gem. With the East Verde river running all around you, many hiking trails, rivers and lakes nearby, it is a fisherman and nature lovers dream. Nestled in the trees and backing to the Tonto forest, in the highly sought after Whispering Pines neighborhood, you’d never guess you were just minutes from restaurants and shopping (10 mile; 20 min drive into Payson)!
BRAND NEW MINI SPLIT COOLING & HEATING SYSTEM INSTALLED JULY 2021!!!
Calendar updated through May 2022. For bookings beyond that, please message host to inquire about specific dates.
We welcome small to medium dogs (with a $30 pet fee), however we ask that you keep them out of the lower level of the cabin and suggest that you keep them leashed or close by at all times when outside so that they don’t run off and get lost in the forest.
On any given day, you are bound to see (& hear) many different forms of wild life including elk, rabbits, hummingbirds, hawks, coyotes, bobcats, a myriad of birds, and free-range cows to name a few. And the fishing in the East Verde river - just a 5 minute walk away - is out of this world...fully stocked with trout all year round! Please note that the water level in the river is lower this year (2021) - and in some parts dry - due to the drought that AZ has experienced.
The space Welcome to Backwoods. This newly remodeled, 2 bedroom/2 bath 1100 SF cozy cottage is located in the heart of the Tonto forest and is designed for privacy, with an elevated wrap-around deck with built in bench seating, an outdoor dining table for 6, hammocks (perfect for a quick afternoon nap), propane grill (propane provided) and propane heater and fire pit (please bring your own propane tank for the heater and fire pit). You'll have the full cottage to yourself, with sleeping arrangements for up to 5 (1 Bdrm with King bed, 1 Bdrm with Queen bed, pull out sleeper sofa with full size memory foam mattress, queen luxury double high air mattress with built-in pump), two full bathrooms, and all the essentials: fridge, stove/oven, microwave, fully stocked coffee bar (just bring your own coffee), complimentary wi-fi, DVD players (& tons of movies), cable and smart TVs (in each bedroom and the two living rooms). There is a wood burning stove in the living room which warms up the entire upper level of the cabin, just bring your own wood and enjoy a cozy fire. The cabin is equipped with a mini-split cooling and heating system. There is also a swamp cooler in the lower level bedroom that can be used if needed, as well as wall fans installed in both living rooms and the lower level bedroom, and a ceiling fan in the master bedroom. There is a ceramic water cooler in the kitchen - you are welcome to bring your own 5 gallon jug of water and use it.
Whispering Pines is located in northern Gila County in the upper valley of the East Verde River, between Washington Park to the north and Beaver Valley to the south. It is 12 miles (19 km) north of Payson.
Other things to note For half of the year, there are federal fire restrictions in place - which means no camp fires. However, there is a private propane fire pit for our guests to use throughout the year - just bring your own propane tank and hook it up. During burn season, we leave a wood burning fire pit out for our guests to use. We just ask that you be sure the fire is completely out before you head in for the night.
The driveway can accommodate about 5 medium size vehicles if you park side-by-side and back-to-back - there is a small inlet in the right of the driveway that can accommodate a small to medium sized vehicle.
Early check-in and late check-out may be available for a $15 fee and must be approved by host in advance of your stay.
As we wish to be able to continue to share our cabin with others, please respect our home as you would your own. You may be charged for any damages incurred during your stay. Guest access Entire home Other things to note - Visitor Information Instructions and Emergency Contact Information can be found on the peg board in the upper level of the cabin.
- Local guidebook binder can be found on the kitchen table.
- Both bedrooms, the kitchen and lower-level living room are equipped with baseboard heaters if needed for extra warmth.
- There are space heaters in both bedroom closets if you need them for extra warmth.
- There is an electric fireplace in the lower level living room that heats up the space exceptionally well. You can use this in lieu of the baseboard heater if you prefer.
- There are wall fans installed in both living rooms and the lower level bedroom that work great for added cooling. The master bedroom is equipped with a ceiling fan for the same.
- Pantry contains owners personally food and other effects, so it is kept locked at all times.
- Guests are welcome to use board games and cards that are kept in the desk cabinet.

This was the perfect getaway that we were looking for. Lots stuff close by to explore with little time investment. Host gave great service. Could have been cleaned a bit too dust some cob webs. But it is a cabin. I would recommend it.
This beautiful cabin is such a nice getaway from the hustle of the city. Tucked away in a beautiful wooded location. We had everything we needed at the cabin. The hosts were very kind and checked to see if we had everything we needed. We will be back!
We had a wonderful time! The cabin was the perfect size for my family of four. There are two living rooms, one upstairs and one downstairs which gave everyone their own space. The upstairs living is large enough for us to sit together comfortably too. There were plenty of plates, pans and utensils for cooking meals. They provided extra blankets and heaters, so we were very comfortable. The hosts are very kind and pleasant to communicate with. We hiked at Water Wheel and Tonto National Bridge during our stay; I highly recommend both. We left with some great family memories and really enjoyed our stay at this cabin.
Throughly enjoyed this VRBO! It was perfect for our family of 5 (2year old, 4year old and our pup). The cabin was stocked with everything we needed! Cozy and homey. Owners were very responsive and accommodating. Make sure to explore the neighborhood! It has some really awesome water spots! Really great to bring the kids too! We will absolutely be staying here again. Thank you Kim and Justin!
Communication with owners was spot on! Location was great for peace and tranquilty. Walks through neighborhood were peaceful with elk sightings daily. Well stocked kitchen and residence ammenities. Thumbs up!
We had a wonderful time! Kim was great with communication. Beds were very comfortable. The only real downfall was I am a senior and the stairs where hard for me.
We had a great time here! Views are beautiful and the cabin warmed up fast! Nice scenic drive from payson to the cabin. Only thing to note is that the listing claims 3 beds and a pullout couch but there were only 2 beds and the pullout. There were 7 of us with 2 in each bed and one on the upstairs couch(not a pullout). Still, everyone slept comfortably and had a great time, so I can’t complain :)

A Relaxing Time In The Forest. Laze on the wraparound deck. Enjoy the wind in the pines. Walk to the Verde River for a picnic or meditation. Or a dip. Learn to love the incessantly cockadoodling rooster across the road by buying fresh eggs laid by his brood.
Thank you for hosting us at your lovely cabin. It was a wonderful place to stay. The cabin was clean and had all the amenities we needed to enjoy our weekend. Waking up to the birds singing and enjoying a cup of coffee on the wrap around porch was glorious. Laying in the hammocks and watching the birds was peaceful. My family of 6 fit perfectly and we had enough space to also enjoy alone time. The owners responded promptly and were courteous. They provide a binder with directions, activities and restaurants. They really put effort into making their guest feel at home. We will definitely be coming back!!
We had the wonderful opportunity to stay in this cabin for a few days! We also brought our baby who is under 1. We were so happy to find a rocking chair which helped out a lot at night. The master bed upstairs was very comfortable. Kitchen had all the necessary tools to cook meals. The porch was so nice to sit and enjoy the trees and the birds. Overall, the cabin had all the amenities that made our stay comfortable and enjoyable! Only thing we would like to mention is that the cabin is right next to the road and the driveway is at an incline. So it was a little difficult for me to turn into the cabin and park but had my husband do it and he had no trouble.

Disliked: Cleanliness, check-in
We recently stayed at this cabin and had a mix of beautiful moments and frustrating challenges. The scenery and balcony views are stunning, the weather was great, and the layout worked well. Having two full bathrooms and heaters in each room was also a plus. The hosts had great communication through the booking app, which we appreciated. That said, cleanliness was a major issue. The floors and rugs were dirty, with dog hair, dirt, and crumbs throughout. We ended up washing all the rugs and scrubbing the floors ourselves on the second day. Even wiping up water showed how dirty the floors were, the paper towel came up black. The cabin was dusty, and because of the lack of cleanliness, we didn’t feel comfortable using the kitchenware. The fridge didn’t get cold until about 24 hours after we adjusted it ourselves. There’s no service before arrival, so you must screenshot the door code. The upstairs tub backed up our last morning. The cabin sits on a steep hill with limited flat space and no enclosed yard. The stairs, especially off the deck, are very steep, I fell and sprained my ankle. The downstairs bed squeaks, and overall comfort was lacking. I barely slept during our stay. Also, the neighbor to the north has an off-leash dog and declined to help due to issues with the owner. With better cleaning and some updates, this could be a great place. I wouldn’t recommend it unless these issues aren’t a concern for you.
"Over the River & Through the Woods To Grandmas' House We Go!"
Great Trip! Whispering Pines is a hidden gem! I took my wife and 3 children (Ages 7,9,11) for Mother's Day weekend. The weather was perfect with plenty of areas to explore near the river fishing and around the mountainside hunting for geodes. We took an afternoon and hiked to Water Wheel which the whole family enjoyed. The seclusion of Whispering Pines away from the city enabled us to view the stars and we saw the solar storm at night. The cabin was cozy and my wife and I reflected that we felt like kids again all tucked in at our Grandparents home. Our only constructive feedback would be it was difficult to stream movies and the internet ran slow. There were DVD's provided that solved the problem. The main bed was also too soft for our taste. However, we still wished we had booked more nights!
Very nice place for a relaxing getaway. Steps to get to main living quarters would be a challenge for some. Plenty of space inside and deck for a group of up to 8. Parking for max 2 vehicles.
Nice comfortable cabin. Beautiful deck, comfortable beds and well stocked supplies. Fishing, hiking and swimming places close. A great place to stay and relax.
