Le site de Paulnay remonterait à une époque antérieure au Moyen-Age, en effet lors de fouilles, les assises d’un temple gallo-romain ont été découvertes ainsi que des inhumations dont les plus anciennes dateraient de l’époque mérovingienne comme le témoignent les deux sarcophages exposés sur le parvis. Le bourg de Paulnay a révélé plusieurs milliers de sépultures sur la place devant l’église. St. Stephen's Church. Built in typical Roman-style Poitevin, the current 12th century church. The facade, similar to that of Our Lady of Fontgombault (Indre), is remarkable for its beautiful portal decorated with sculptures (plant motifs, sirens, birds) Paulnay has a fine collection of paintings (15th century): remains of Hell (north side of the nave), calendar and work for months angel musicians (right row of the choir), Christ in Majesty on the cul-de-four , and below in the form of banner episodes of the martyrdom of St. Stephen, the church's patron. Site Paulnay dates back to a time before the Middle Ages. Indeed, during excavations, the foundations of a Roman temple were discovered. The two sarcophagi, exposed on the square are of Merovingian.
