History, sports and entertainment, and a true western spirit, make “The Big Friendly” a great family destination.

With gardens, an amusement park, science museums, a zoo, cowboy museum, and western-themed shows and art galleries, there is plenty to do in Oklahoma city that doesn’t take place in its most famous district, Bricktown. While you should still see this former warehouse area turned entertainment district, it’s worth visiting the other attractions too. The state capital of Oklahoma was established in the 1880s following a land rush on newly released prairie land. The first settlers to arrive were pioneers and homesteaders, known as the Boomers and the Sooners. These days, most visitors mainly visit the north side of the Oklahoma River, where the main attractions are. The streets are set out in simple grids and getting around by car is easy. You can also jump on the Metro Transit bus or the hop-on, hop-off Downtown Discovery bus.The Arts District sits to the west of downtown and is where you’ll find the Oklahoma City Museum of Art and Myriad Botanical Gardens. The five-day Festival of Arts takes place in this district each spring. Before you leave, visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial to commemorate the 1995 bomb attacks on a government building.Art lovers can move on to the Paseo Arts District, with its colourful stucco buildings and galleries. At night, head east of downtown to the city’s most lively area: Bricktown. Visit a steakhouse or go dancing. If you are here between April and September, watch an Oklahoma City RedHawks baseball match at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Nearby to Bricktown is the historical district of Deep Deuce, once a centre for jazz and African-American culture in the 1940s. In the northeast is the “Adventure District” with interactive museums and theme parks. Visit the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, or take the kids to the Science Museum or Oklahoma City Zoo. The Zoo Amphitheatre is part of the city’s live music scene and often hosts performances by well-known bands.Of course, you can’t visit a former cowboy city without seeing cattle. Go to Stockyards City to witness an auction at the huge National Stockyards cattle market.
