First some context: I was having dinner and drinks with friends in the popular "Sunabe Seawall" area of Chatan, Okinawa. Japan's blood alcohol limit for driving is .03, meaning you'll need a taxi if you have even one drink (there are no trains in Okinawa, as opposed to the rest of Japan where the train system is ubiquitous.) So instead of paying for a taxi home, then asking my wife to unhappily agree to drive me back in the morning to get my car, I chose to stay at the Hotel Sunset American. The hotel was a great price (maybe a few more dollars than the cost of a taxi), a GREAT location for anyone spending the night in Sunabe. The front desk clerk was terrific and spoke great English. Check-in took 60 seconds. The room was small and spartan: a TV with 3 Japanese only channels, a tiny bathroom with toilet, sink, and tub/shower, with soap and shampoo. The bed is small with just one pillow. The mattress was very firm (normal in Japan), but was comfortable. The sheets were clean and of good quality. The heater and AC worked very well. The room was very clean. For the price, it was a very good stay. IMPORTANT: the front desk is not staffed after 2200, so you need to make sure you check in before 2200, or you won't be able to check in until the next day. I'd stay again given the circumstances.
