Nuevo León is a state with intriguing colonial towns, fascinating archeological sites and one of the largest cities in Mexico. Rivers, waterfalls and underground caves make up some of the spectacular scenery in the heart of the province. Explore the picturesque, rocky outdoors for extreme sports and other activities. 

Spend some time in Nuevo León’s capital, Monterrey, one of the largest cities in Mexico. It is also among the warmest and driest, with mild winters. While you are here, try the local delicacy of cabrito goat; the recipe comes from the Sephardic Jewish Spanish founders of the city.

Bring children to Monterrey’s KidZania, an interactive “city” with role play and more than 70 activities. Adults may prefer Casino Monterrey or Casino Jubilee. Stroll through the historic center to admire the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of Monterrey, the Palacio Municipal and the Capilla de los Dulces Nombres. These lie beside the gardens and pathways of the Macroplaza, the main town square.

In Monterrey’s southern outskirts is the Grutas de García, a mesmerizing underground realm. Ride a cable car to the cave entrance and take a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) guided tour. Further south is the spectacular cascades of the Cola de Caballo. Make your way west to the Canon de Huasteca, a large canyon with scenic trails.

Visit Linares, a Pueblo Mágico (Magic Town), which lies in the orange belt—an agriculturally rich area—between a pair of tributaries of the San Fernando River. Spend time in the city’s main plaza to admire the architecture of the surrounding buildings, including Catedral de San Felipe and the Palacio Municipal.

Explore more of the orange belt to see endless stretches of fruit orchards and stop in the town of Montemorelos.

The state of Nuevo León lies on the border with Texas in the U.S. It is just east of Coahuila and west of Tamaulipas, approaching the Atlantic Coast. Fly to Monterrey International Airport or enter the state via regional buses, which get you around the cities and villages.
