![Located on the northeast coast of São Miguel, Farol do Arnel was the first lighthouse to be built in the Azores, and began operation on 26 November 1876.  

It’s still a working lighthouse today, 141 years later, and is open for guided tours every Wednesday afternoon.  As luck would have it, we were there on a Wednesday afternoon, but we only discovered this fact when the lighthouse keeper saw us poking around and invited us inside.

A word of warning though: if you plan to visit Farol do Arnel, park your car at the top and walk down – unless you’re a very competent driver or have an addiction to adrenaline and danger.

"Me, myself and I spend one week in this cosy and fully equiped appartment a week in Juny 2021\. It was also very quiet, only the ocean waves made sounds. It was very clean. "This home is beautifully decorated and a great highend feel away from home. All of the amenities were great & the home is kept clean. The host was great with communication. My only negative is that the area outside the home has limited dining options other than at small place across the street that closes at 6pm 4 days a week and is more a yummy breakfast or lunch spot (also with kind owners). Also there is no Uber on the island, only Bolt and it's new so it may be hard at times to get drivers...

The views were spectacular, the gardens and surrounding property were beautifully maintained, and the setting felt peaceful and thoughtfully designed. Travel to and from the property was easy, the location was ideal, and the home itself was very comfortable—everything we needed to relax and fully enjoy our time. Overall, the experience exceeded all expectations. Tradicampo is a special place, and we could not have asked for a better way to close out such an important trip. We loved our stay and will absolutely be back!"
