Pocket Guide: Dresden Neustadt Hotels
While many visitors head straight for Dresden’s Altstadt, the city’s main historic centre, for a different vibe head across the Augustus Bridge to Neustadt. This lively district has independent shops, upmarket restaurants and a hip late-night bar scene that attracts a younger crowd.
Cultural Highlights of Neustadt
Compared to the elegant domes and ornate palaces of Altstadt, Innere Neustadt has a more vibrant street appeal. Check out the colourful graffiti, quirky shops and urban nightlife. Known locally as the Baroque Quarter, and despite the new-town label, Neustadt dates back some 800 years and is the oldest part of Dresden.
Visit Kunsthofpassage, a maze of alleyways and courtyards lined with quirky shops and cafes, and Pfunds Molkerei on Bautznerstrasse, a tiny dairy from 1880, which has a beautifully detailed Neo-Renaissance interior. And don't miss climbing the tower of the Church of the Three Kings on Hauptstrasse, which offers beautiful, sweeping views of Altstadt.
Upmarket Hotels in Neustadt
While the majority of hotels are across the River Elbe in the streets around Altstadt, there are several upmarket hotels in Dresden’s Neustadt, including the historic Hotel Bellevue with its world-famous Canaletto view, as well as a spa and an indoor pool.
For more fashionable, style-led hotels in Neustadt, head to the streets surrounding Palaisgarten or Neustadt railway station, where you'll find a couple of modern mid-range hotels with a design bent. If you’re in Dresden on a budget, check out the quirky floating hostel on a former riverboat on the Elbe.
Neustadt's Bar and Dining Scene
After a busy day exploring the Dresden’s top sights, head back to your Neustadt hotel for a cocktail in the bar, or venture out and sample the district’s famous nightlife. Many of Neustadt’s best bars and bistros are around Albertstrasse, where you'll find a real mix of traditional brewhouses selling Dresden’s famous Radeberger pilsner, unique bars offering molecular cocktails and intimate jazz rooms, all guaranteeing a great night out for all.
