History of Spinola Palace

A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, Spinola Palace (Palazzo Spinola di Pellicceria) was built in 1563 and is lavishly decorated with flamboyant frescoes by Italian late-Renaissance painter Lazzaro Tavarone and 18th-century Genoese master painter Lorenzo De Ferrari. The palace was designed by eminent architect Bernardino Cantone, who also created Genoa's stunning Palazzi on grand boulevard Via Garibaldi.

Spinola Palace was once owned by the Spinola family, one of Genoa's most important aristocratic families. But the Marquis Paolo and Franco Spinola donated the building to the Italian government in 1958, along with its furniture, curtains, porcelain, artwork, ceramics, books and silverware. And it has housed a national gallery since 1959.

Visiting the National Ligurian Gallery

On the ground floor of Spinola Palace, explore the display of heirlooms from brothers Franco and Paolo Spinola, while the first floor is dotted with paintings by Fiasella and Van Dyck. Entertain yourself in the gallery of mirrors on the second floor before heading to the upper two floors, with highlights including a rare Ecce Homo by Antonello da Messina.

Stay near the National Ligurian Gallery at Spinola Palace in Genoa's historic centre, where you'll find a maze of narrow cobbled streets lined with pavement cafes, shops and restaurants to enjoy before returning to your hotel.
