Pocket Guide: Western Division Nadi Hotels
If you’re coming to Fiji, you’re guaranteed at least a glimpse of Nadi. As the home of the country’s largest international airport, Nadi is the sun-soaked gateway to Fiji’s 300-plus islands. It wears its tourist town badge with pride. From the shopping to the restaurants, everything on Nadi’s lively main drag is geared towards the constant flow of international visitors. But for a flavour of ‘real’ Fiji, you don’t have to venture too far from the centre of town to discover sugar cane fields and neighbourhoods full of locals.
Exploring the Centre of Nadi
Nadi’s shop-lined Main Street is right at the heart of the action. Most stores on this stretch are dedicated to kitschy knick-knacks and duty-free goods, but there are authentic keepsakes to be found too, including wooden tanoas, drinking bowls made for knocking back the local drink of choice, kava. You can also head away from the centre of town to Nadi’s handicraft market, where you can hunt for local crafts and chat with the stallholders.
Excursions and Island-Hopping from Nadi
Because the town is located right in the middle of Viti Levu’s west coast, a hotel in Nadi makes a great base for exploring Fiji’s main island. It’s also a perfect base for island-hopping, with Nadi International Airport just minutes away by road.
Find a Hotel in Nadi
Accommodation in Nadi comes in every type and price range. There are budget guesthouses and modest apartments, mid-range hotels and luxury beachfront suites in five-star resorts. If it’s a secluded and peaceful spot you’re after, the Nadi hotels and resorts dotted along Wailoaloa Beach are ideal. New Town Beach is also relatively isolated, and has the added bonus of views across the water to the Sabeto Mountains.
Eating out in Nadi
Nadi’s restaurants are as many and varied as its hotels. From fine-dining to street stalls, you’ll find a mix of traditional Fijian, Chinese and Western flavours. The dish to try is lovo, a Fijian feast cooked in a pit oven. There’s also plenty of excellent Indian cuisine to get your teeth into, thanks to Nadi’s large Indo-Fijian population.
