"Due to the proximity of this hotel to the current Ebola outbreak we gave advance notice of our need to cancel. Many hotels on Expedia will give 100% of your reservation back for a cancelation. Some have a more restrictive 50% refund policy. This was the only hotel in our travels that had an unfair and unreasonable cancellation policy. We even reached out to the staff but unfortunately they were very unresponsive. I recommend looking for hotels that are customer focused. This hotel is not."

One&Only Gorilla's Nest

10/10 Excellent

"Best hotel experience I have ever had. Service and staff were impeccable. The food was excellent and the room was exceptional. Ambiance of the restaurants and Jacks Hanna house was great- my coffee tasting and archery class help to fill my time."

Sambora Kinigi

10/10 Excellent

"Our stay at Sambora Kinigi was truly special and one we will remember for a long time. From the moment we arrived, we felt so welcomed, cared for, and at home. Decoration was beautiful. Every single member of the team was incredibly kind and went above and beyond to make our stay special. Traveling with our baby daughter can sometimes require a little extra planning and flexibility, but the team accommodated all of our needs with so much warmth, patience, and genuine care. It made such a difference to be able to relax and enjoy our time knowing that our little family was being looked after so thoughtfully. They also helped us plan our trekking experience, making the whole process so easy and enjoyable. Their local knowledge and willingness to help with every detail made us feel completely taken care of, both at the hotel and while exploring the area. And a very special thank you to Kai, the manager, who was absolutely extraordinary. Her attention, kindness, and genuine desire to make sure everything was perfect truly stood out. She made us feel not just like guests, but like family. We left Sambora Kinigi with beautiful memories and so much appreciation for the people who made our stay so wonderful. We would love to come back and wholeheartedly recommend this beautiful place to anyone visiting the area."

Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge

10/10 Excellent

"I’d stay here again in a heartbeat, especially if you’re coming to Rwanda for gorilla trekking. The staff were truly outstanding and went above and beyond throughout my entire stay. Everyone was incredibly warm, helpful, flexible, and genuinely focused on making sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed. One of the best touches was coming back after a long day of trekking and having them offer to wash my hiking boots, clean my feet, and give me a foot massage. After hours on the mountain, it felt absolutely amazing and was such a thoughtful level of service. This is also a perfect hotel for gorilla trekking. Almost everyone staying there was doing a trek, so the staff completely understand the schedule and what guests need. They can prepare a packed lunch for you to take on longer hikes and make the whole experience incredibly easy. Beautiful hospitality, wonderful staff, and exceptional service. They made my stay feel special, and I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Volcanoes National Park."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Mudende?

The best area to stay in Mudende is generally around the town centre, particularly near the main road, for convenience and access.

The town centre of Mudende is relatively compact, with the main road (often referred to as National Road 1 or RN1) passing directly through it. This area offers the most readily available accommodation options and provides easy access to local shops, small eateries, and the market. You'll find most of what Mudende has to offer within a short walk or drive from this central point.

For travellers looking for a practical base to explore the surrounding Western Province, staying close to the RN1 is ideal. This allows for straightforward onward travel to destinations like Gisenyi (Rubavu) on Lake Kivu or Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking.

When is the best time to go to Mudende?

The best time to visit Mudende, Western Province, Rwanda, is during the long dry season from June to September or the shorter dry season from December to February.

These periods offer the most pleasant weather conditions for exploring the region. You'll experience warm temperatures and significantly less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, gorilla trekking, and enjoying the beautiful scenery of Lake Kivu. The well-maintained trails are drier and easier to navigate during these months.

For those planning activities that involve extensive time outdoors, such as multi-day treks or boat tours on Lake Kivu, the long dry season from June to September is particularly advantageous. The consistently clear skies provide excellent visibility for stunning photographs and a more comfortable experience overall.

If your visit is focused on a combination of wildlife viewing and enjoying the local culture without the peak season crowds, the shorter dry season from December to February is also a good option.

Can I cancel my hotel reservation on Expedia?

You can cancel your hotel reservation on Expedia, though it depends on the cancellation policy of your booking. Most bookings are refundable if canceled within 24-48 hours of the scheduled arrival. Be sure to check your booking confirmation for the exact cancellation policy. If free cancellation is available, you can cancel directly through your Expedia account by logging in, going to "My Trips", and selecting your reservation. To find flexible deals, filter your search by "Fully refundable property" for hotels in Mudende.

How much is the nightly rate at a Mudende hotel?

All sorts of factors affect price, such as the time of year or the days of the week you choose for your stay.
