The ryokan has everything that embodies the Japanese spirit with all the comforts that you need. The ryokan despite being over a 100 years old is incredibly comfortable with spotless rooms, that are generously sized for you to feel both comfortable and at home. The standout, however, is not the cozy nature of the ryokan, or the countless little touches they have throughout that make you feel at home but the spectacular staff. The staff are welcoming, courteous and make every effort for you to have an enjoyable stay. They are incredibly hospitable and helped us on numerous occasions with restaurant bookings (as we did not have a local Japanese number) as well as assisting us after our stay with lost property (not at the ryokan either!). I would not hesitate to come back to Gifu just to stay at the Hidaya again. They kept everything a complete secret from my partner (it was a surprise proposal), worked discreetly behind the scenes, and paid close attention to even the smallest details so the moment felt natural, personal, and entirely “us.” What stood out most was how invested the staff were - this did not feel like a standard celebration package or a routine request. The team treated it as something truly special, tailoring the experience to us with warmth, care, and sincere enthusiasm. Their coordination, timing, and sensitivity were flawless, and they made the entire experience feel bespoke rather than scripted. Beyond the proposal itself, the ryokan is beautiful, the rooms are elegant and comfortable, and the kaiseki dinner was outstanding. Every interaction reflected genuine hospitality and pride in what they do. This is a place where people truly care.
