Gaze up at this giant X-shaped sculpture, which symbolizes the coming together and integration of Mexico’s indigenous and Spanish cultures.

Rising up from flatland on the Mexico-U.S. border is the Monument Mexicanidad (Monumento a la Mexicanidad). Visit this colossal landmark to appreciate the work of an acclaimed Mexican artist famous for designing oversized sculptures. The Monument Mexicanidad dominates its namesake plaza, which is the location for events such as music festivals.

The monument is the creation of Enrique Carbajal González, a sculptor more commonly known as Sebastián. It is a steel structure built in the form of the letter X and is 197 feet (60 metres) tall. This height makes it clearly visible from both sides of the border. At night, view it illuminated by floodlights and turned into a dazzling beacon of light.

According to Sebastián, the monument is a symbol of the mixture of Mexico’s ancient indigenous people and the cultures of Spanish colonists. Note how one of the upper points is incomplete. This is a reference to endless efforts to improve the ideals of the city and nation.

Consider another theory suggesting that the monument represents the letter X of Mexico. The nation’s name was changed from Mejico by Benito Juárez during his tenure as president. Locals often refer to the monument as La X or La X de Sebastián.

Surrounding the monument is Plaza de la Mexicanidad, a modern square with paved and grass sections. Sit on the steps of the square to admire the architecture and contemplate its significance. In the square’s western corner is a performance stage. It hosts music events that feature local and international artists.

The Monument Mexicanidad is located in the northern central area of Ciudad Juárez. Plaza de Armas, the heart of the city’s historic centre, is 4 miles (6 kilometres) to the west. Visit Chamizal Federal Public Park, a popular nearby attraction. Within the park is Chamizal Museum of Archaeology, home to examples of Aztec, Olmec and Maya sculptures.
