Pocket Guide: Vila Real Santo Antonio Monte Gordo Hotels

No matter what type of hotel you are looking for, whether that’s a four star hotel or a budget apartment near the beach, Expedia will help you find your perfect hotel in Monte Gordo.

Monte Gordo is a popular family destination with a huge, flat beach backed by sand dunes, wide pedestrian streets, good food and gorgeous sun.

Things to Do

Book your hotel near Monte Gordo Beach and enjoy a bit of swimming and basking in the sun. The beach is generally crowded, but large enough to accommodate the crowds. If you have younger children this beach is slightly warmer with calmer water, making it perfect for a swim, than the beaches on the western Algarve.

On the borders of the beach there’s a lovely tree lined promenade with plenty of cafes, gift shops and supermarkets. At night, the best thing to do is to stroll by the beach or eat ice cream on the terraces.

Visit the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, an ancient church that is a place of devotion for fishermen. The date it was founded and built has been lost to the annals of time.

On the second Sunday of September, there’s a fishing boat procession for Our Lady of Sorrows all over the bay where fishermen ask for blessings and divine protection for their decorated boats. The floating procession is certainly a unique experience.

Discover the Sapal area, a salt marsh nature reserve between Castro Marim, Monte Gordo and Vila Real de Santo António, which is home to some 153 species of birds. Amongst these are flamingos and you can also spot some reptiles, amphibians and over 400 plant species.

Explore Cacela Velha, a charming Algarvean white washed village with stunning views across nearby Manta Rota Beaches.

Taste the local food. Monte Gordo has plenty of great places to eat and drink, with bars and restaurants where you can enjoy local cuisine, with delicious fish and seafood being the most popular choice. You can find restaurants and shops on the main road, not only on the town side but also on the promenade in front of the beach.

Explore Monte Gordo by bike. There are plenty of places where you can hire bicycles and you can cycle all the way to Vila Real de Santo António under the shade of the pine trees.

Play games in the local Casino or practice playing golf in Castro Marim or Vila Real de Santo António golf courses. If you enjoy water sports like kitesurfing or windsurfing, they are also available in the area. Traveling on a river-cruise boat between the border of Portugal and Spain makes for another great day out.
