Minh Dam Mountain

Once a stronghold for Viet Cong militants, these mystical mountains hide scenic trails and magnificent views over the South China Sea.

Explore a network of stone caves and swim in the freshwater pools of the Minh Dam Mountains. Stroll through lush green forests and spot monkeys playing in the trees high above.

Renamed in 1948 to honour two revolutionary martyrs, the Minh Dam Mountains were a strategic base during wars against France and the U.S. Most of the original buildings have been destroyed. However, look for glimpses of some of the original fortifications as well as stunning mountain scenery and the fascinating network of caves.

Many head straight for the intriguing caves once used for shelter and launching surprise attacks against opposition forces. Spend a couple of hours exploring the caves that are open to the public. You will see a number of strange rock formations, as well as some bullet holes still remaining from the wars.

Back outside, hike the interconnecting paths that weave their way up and down the mountain. The mountains are surrounded by ocean on three sides, so you can be sure to have spectacular coastal views. Look east across the white sands of Long Hai Beach and west to the busy streets of VungTau. As you explore the forest, watch for the monkeys and wild squirrels that live in the trees.

Cool off in one of the small lagoons. These are fed by freshwater streams, so the water is guaranteed to be refreshingly cold.

Minh Dam Mountain is located just inland from Long Hai village and resort. If you don’t want to hike all the way to the top, get a taxi to drop you off at the car park by the old military base. Coming fromVungTau is about a 30-minute taxi ride.Inquire in Long Hai if you are interested in visiting Minh Dam with a guide.
