The region

Blue Anchor is a quiet coastal village on the West Somerset shore, with 1.5 miles of beach and views across the Bristol Channel to Wales.

The village sits between Minehead (4 miles east) and Watchet (3 miles west) on the edge of Exmoor National Park. Blue Anchor Bay is a long stretch of sand and shingle, popular for beachcombing, fossil hunting, and simply enjoying the wide open seascape. The Driftwood Cafe on the seafront serves breakfast, lunch, and cream teas, and The Smugglers pub provides a traditional village local.

Getting Around

Blue Anchor has its own station on the West Somerset Railway -- a heritage steam line running between Minehead and Bishops Lydeard. The trains run regularly during the season and make a wonderful day out in their own right, but the station also provides a scenic way to reach Minehead, Dunster, Washford, and Watchet without the car.

Nearby Towns and Villages

Watchet (3 miles west) is a characterful harbour town with independent shops, cafes, a marina, and a small museum. Minehead (4 miles east) is the nearest large town, with supermarkets (Tesco, Morrisons, Lidl), high street shops, banks, and a wide sandy beach. It is also the starting point of the 630-mile South West Coast Path.

Dunster (5 miles) is one of the finest medieval villages in England, with its hilltop castle (National Trust), octagonal Yarn Market, and a main street lined with independent shops, tea rooms, and galleries. Cleeve Abbey (English Heritage), just 1 mile inland from Blue Anchor, is a remarkably complete medieval monastery well worth a visit.
