Train from Cologne to Dusseldorf about 11 Euros and half an hour. Takes you into main station, go down 2 levels to U Bahn for number 79 tram direct to Messe. Easy.

Its a construction site, I even encountered a mechanical digger coming towards me on the pedestrian access route, Health & Safety eh!
