An excellent place to stay in Matera
First of all, we had a few issues with our travel arrangements. The hotel was very accommodating and made several phone calls on our behalf. We were very impressed. The location is in the heart of the old town so very convenient for sightseeing. The room was spacious and comfortable. A huge bathroom was built into an old cave. We had ample choice for breakfast. Overall, highly recommended

Great place to stay right in the heart of Matera Sassi. Staff is very welcoming, good breakfast. Only drawback was the a/c as it did not produce enough cold air to cool the room.

Fabulous and Fascinating Place
Beautiful property with a fantastic location in the Sassi. Clean and luxurious rooms. Absolutely wonderful breakfast and coffee. We don’t speak Italian- so the young woman who spoke English at our evening check in was super helpful.

This is a cave hotel. Our room was on the top floor inside a cave. The view from our room faced the old town of Matera. It was spectacular. Breakfast offered a great variety of food, coffee made for you, fresh! The staff was so friendly. High recommended. Please note, if you are driving into Matera, you will need to park in a nearby garage, and catch the shuttle to this hotel. This area is steep and roads uneven, therefore you need good walking shoes.

This is a unique property in the middle of antic city Matera. Beautiful views from the windows to die for, location, etc. Hotel is in excellent condition, furniture, room design, etc. Breakfast is very good. Great options for fine food in the area. You need to be prepare to walk a lot in the city of Matera with steps up and down including to and from hotel. If you can not walk - it is not for you. Parking (free or paid) is on the street within 10-15 min or so walking. Finding can be a problem. Do not bring large car unless you planning to park in some private parking and take taxi to hotel. We had Fiat 500 and it was great. Hotel can arrange transportation too. Just call them. We left our suite cases in the trunk of the car and walked to hotel with small backpacks. it was perfect.

We love where the hotel is centrally located, the staff is very helpful (especially Maria Angela she helped us with the tour and restaurant reservation). Room is what it was describe, clean sheets and bathroom.

Unique hotel
Our stay was lovely. Our room was at the very top of the complex (about 75 steps up) so we struggled with a bags. The lady who ran the place actually carried mine which was nice but i wish there was a note in the room description as i avoid these rooms. The view was snagging though. Also, our room was not serviced during our 2 day stay which was also disappointing. I found this unusual for the style and other service at the property.

The place never stops giving
One of the best experiences of my life. The town, the Hotel, the atmosphere, all total amazing. It was Mr Bond that showed me this for the first time. I was coming to South of France for a Month anyway, so I had a week here.

Absolutely amazing. Be prepared for a lot of steps but well worth it. Bed so comfortable. Bathroom out of this world amazing. Breakfast just perfect, best coffee ever. The staff are wonderful. I would definitely recommend staying here.

Out of this world
This was the most amazing place we have ever stayed. Matera and this property are mind blowing. Lovely friendly reception. Authentic cave accommodation and very spacious. Great advice on local restaurants. Breakfast fit for royalty. Really an amazing experience overall.

An amazing, beautiful and unique experience! The property was charming and quaint. We loved our stay and will come back. It is also a convenient location to stay in Sassi, easy to access in comparison to others. There are a few parking spots out front that you can temporarily park to drop off your luggage then move your car to parking garage a short walk away.

La zona a traffico limitato ora non consente di arrivare in auto per il check-in, suggeriamo di andare direttamente al garage poi prendere il transfer per arrivare in hotel. Couldn’t have picked a better hotel in a better location. View is spectacular and gives the true feeling of matera. Everyone was lovely, happy hour with beautiful wine from the region and delicious breakfast variety. Dinner spot across the street very recommended- da nico. Would definitely come back if visiting Matera again.

Charming property in the middle of Matera's Sassi. Room was spacious, well decorated and maintained. Staff was attentive and very kind. The highlight for us was the shared terrace: it has an amazing view and we ended up spending there a lot time while enjoying breakfast, working, and just relaxing in the sun.

Everything perfect aside from check out.
Loved our stay here, location is right in the Sassi with an unbelievable view from all of the rooms of the old town. Whilst you can't drive to the hotel they happily collect you from a car park. Check in was friendly and when we saw our room it was WOW! Built into the cave with an amazing bathroom, especially the bath area itself, we loved it. The breakfast was a little disappointing, this may be because of the Covid situation but it was just a roll, croissant and some sweet bread and cake, not really our thing. We did have a little problem on check out, not entirely the hotels fault perhaps where they tried to charge us for a 2 bedroom place that we had originally booked for one of our party but had then cancelled due to Covid some time before. (we only stayed in a one bedroom) However the lady who checked us out could hardly speak any English and our Italian is sadly zero and therefore we couldn't get her to understand, she just kept insisting we must pay. I asked her to call the manager so I could explain to him and although she eventually did she bluntly refused to let me speak with him, instead she insisted on speaking to him. He did finally agree to charge us the correct amount but the whole thing took way to long and could have been resolved in a fraction of the time had she let me speak with him. A shame really as it did let us leave with a bad impression but now we are back all I can think of this hotel is wow again. I'd thoroughly recommend a stay here.

This is one of the most charming hotels I have ever stayed at. The room are very luxurious and the service incredible. The view from the room was spectacular, I can't recommend this place enough!!!

Fabulous Fra i Sassi
Absolutely amazing location. Room was fabulous, bathroom was huge and luxurious. Walked straight out door to wander the streets and all the main sites. Also fabulous was their decking area which had lounges and tables and chairs and every night we sat and relaxed and had drinks delivered to us from their bar area whilst we admired the amazing views. Also as limited parking there was an excellent drop off area for luggage which was very well organised by the hotel with our car rego number. Beautiful restaurants located within minutes walk. Cannot fault and cannot wait to go back for a visit.

God helps those who help themselves
In correspondence with staff person who spoke English, I was assured a tour could be arranged upon arrival. No need to do it in advance. Of course when we got there, he couldn’t arrange anything so I booked a tour myself but had to pay more as all less expensive tours fully booked.

Wonderful Experience in a Magical Place
Lovely room in a sassi with a magnificent view. Unlike other reviews we had no trouble finding the place using Google maps. They also offered valet parking fo 18 euros a day.helpful staff with good English. Couldn’t find a better place to enjoy Matera.

We very much enjoyed our stay in the deluxe suite #8. The room was quite large and well-furnished and the ‘cave’ bathroom was unique and lovely. The view of the Sassi outside our door was amazing. Fra Sassi is perfectly located for a stay in Matera as you will be able to walk right into the heart of the Sassi experience. The drive to the property is fine if you obtain the directions from the property, and we strongly recommend that you take advantage of the car drop off service. There was several steps up to many of the rooms which can be a little difficult with luggage, but the view and location are well worth it. The breakfast was a fine, typical Italian breakfast which you can enjoy in the breakfast area or bring to your room. There are several sets of tables and chairs outside the rooms so that you can enjoy the view. We would strongly recommend this residence for an ideal location within historic Matera.

Great hotel, Nice location, Clean & Spacious room
Upon our arrival, we received a courtesy upgrade to room 9, the suite. The room was spacious, comfortable bed, and bathroom was nice with a shower and Japanese bath. Caution, this room is at the top with lots of steps, and no elevator, so be prepared to carry your luggage up/down and walk the steps daily. Nice view from the room. Breakfast was lovely with good sweet and savory options and included in the room rate. In the heart of Sassi and easy walking to key tourist sites. No parking onsite, we opted to valet the car for a fee.

I was so impressed with everything about this place, very courteous staff Anna and the rest of the staff, heartfelt accommodations, very respectful, very helpful. The place is so beautiful so unique, very artistically designed place, I love the bed and the bath tub, I stayed in a room with a patio viewing the houses of Matera. Breakfast buffet was very good , fulfilling and fresh, served with beautiful smile of the staff. I am highly recommending this place. A 5 star accommodations. Thank you guys for your help and wonderful smile , it makes us so very happy and comfortable with our stays. I can’t stop thinking of the place... I am definitely coming back with my family

Classy Sassi!
This is fantastic accommodation, excellent location, fabulous views, very helpful staff. It was a highlight of our stay in southern Italy. Even the valet parking was well organised & saved having to negotiate the narrow roads too much. So much to see and do, local restaurants on the doorstep. Cannot rate this place highly enough.

Dreamlike Matera
We loved our stay in Matera, which has become one of the favorite placed ever visited. Room 1, next to the reception, had a fabulous bathroom. The room was big, clean, and comfortable. The views from the front door and the back terrace were outstanding. Breakfast was superb, especially the apple cake. We were offered coffee by the receptionist upon check in and the cappuccino and cafe latte were delicious. You don’t need a car to visit Matera. You can walk everywhere. The hotel location is very convenient and there are several good restaurants nearby.

Excellent location in Sassi
Stayed two nights at Fra i Sassi. Hard to find on car GPS but Google Maps did the job. Best to use the hotel service of parking your car at a garage as you can't park in the Sassi area. Easy walk up to the main square from the hotel and several great restaurants close by. The view is spectacular from the hotel, especially at night . Great selection of fruit, pastries, etc. for breakfast. Room was comfortable with a large, modern shower.

Perfect Matera stay
This property was absolutely perfect. Amazing view, great breakfast, comfortable room. And if that's not enough, Anna went above and beyond to make sure we saw all the best Rupestri and ate at the best places. She was more than accommodating with our cars and directions. I would absolutely stay here again.

Wonderful small hotel in a wonderful place.
A beautiful little place, lovely spacious room, marvelous views of the ancient city and friendly, helpful staff. Good breakfast. Everything was very clean and well presented. Very comfy bed and plenty of room for clothes in the wardrobe area. Excellent terrace with comfortable seating. The many stairs up to the hotel could be a problem for some people. A quiet, attractive area and an easy walk to good restaurants. I really enjoyed my stay.
