Northampton's Market Square is one of the oldest (and biggest) market squares in England. The market here was originally held at All Saints Churchyard until 1235, when King Henry III demanded it be moved to its current location in the market square. Visitors come from far and wide to shop at the market, staying in town centre chain hotels, B&Bs and independent inns in Northampton.
The area surrounding the market square is home to many historic buildings dating back as far as the 18th Century, including Welsh House and Victoria House. It's here that you will also find traditional inns and B&Bs offering a warm welcome to families and couples. Most offer free WiFi and amenities such as cribs or roll-away beds for younger visitors and some have their own restaurant and bar. Affordable chain hotels in the town centre are another option for those visiting Northampton on a budget – all within easy walking distance of the market square.
Northampton market is open six days a week, with a fruit, vegetable and flower market on Mondays and general stalls from Tuesday to Saturday selling everything from local produce to jewellery and history books. On the second Saturday of each month there is a wonderfully eclectic antiques market selling bric-a-brac, jewellery and antiques. Families visiting Northamptonshire will find the county has other markets worth visiting too, such as Brackley Market, Corby Market and Daventry Market, which has been trading since 1255. Groups of friends and families staying in serviced apartments in the town will find these have well-equipped kitchens, giving you the perfect excuse to pick up some local ingredients at the markets to prepare a meal. This is often a more affordable option than dining out.
Northampton has plenty of affordable hotels to choose from, leaving you with more money to spend at the county's markets. Hotels in the town have excellent amenities such as private bathrooms, free WiFi and complimentary breakfasts, allowing couples, families and groups of friends to relax and enjoy their break in Northampton.
