"Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Royal Hotel in Stromness. The location is excellent. Close to ferry, buses and shops. Breakfasts were always very good. Decor in room very well done with interesting artwork. Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Dinners at sister hotel "Ferry Hotel" extremely good. Architecture and historical photographic history of The Royal and Stromness very interesting. "

"Lovely old manor house, extremely well kept up. Rooms were quite large and well appointed. Breakfast was excellent as was the attention of John (owner/staff). Loved the Library."

"This was one of the best hotels we have stayed at. The suite was a very creative design and so comfortable. The staff were amazing in how they made sure we were comfortable. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous in its design which is relatively newly renovated we understood. The management was so helpful . They kept our bags safely until we left for the night ferry. The bar was great and the food at both the bar and restaurant very tasty and reasonable in cost. Also need to mention the staff at Northline ferry who helped us secure comfortable return trip and the tourist information !! A very special place is Kirkwall!!!!"

"Pros: Friendly staff. Fantastic English breakfast. Great location, walking distance from the ferry terminal and all stores near the Stronmess waterfront. Even without an elevator, the parking location made it easy to access the room. Beds were clean and comfortable. Showers had nice high water pressure that gave a massage feeling. Cons: The building is historic, so the floors had older carpet. Newer flooring, e.g. newer carpet or luxury vinyl plank could improve the stay experience. Parking area had mosquitos after the rain. Mosquito counter measures may have been helpful. E.g. Spaying, stratgeically placed zappers, torches, etc... This was our first visit to the Orkney islands. We visited in August. Insect repellant is highly recommended when visiting certain areas on the island. The local people were all very friendly. Overall, the Stromness hotel was a great experience. My family and friends all had a fun time. We would stay at this hotel again if we were to visit the Orkney Islands."
