Pocket Guide: Mahabalipuram

Many visitors to Chennai make the journey south to the ancient seaport of Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, to enjoy its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful UNESCO-listed temples. It’s all set against an enchanting backdrop of the Bay of Bengal.

Hotels near Mahabalipuram

There’s a good choice of hotels in Mahabalipuram that will suit all budgets. You can stay in a traditional hotel with an outdoor pool and lush, palm-filled gardens, and yet be only a few steps away from the beach.

Or splash out with a stay in a luxury beachside resort hotel, where you can pamper yourself in a full-service spa, swim in an outdoor pool and take advantage of a wide range of restaurants and bars. As Mahabalipuram is quite a compact town, your hotel won’t be far from all the major sights as well as the beach.

What to See in Mahabalipuram

Head out from your hotel in Mahabalipuram to discover the legacy of the Pallava dynasty which flourished in South India from AD275 to AD897 thanks to the number of stone temples that survive. One of the must-see sights of Mahabalipuram is Shore Temple, an eight-century complex of three temples overlooking the Bay of Bengal. It’s one of the oldest stone temples in South India and has exquisitely intricate carvings.

Every year from December to January, it’s the magical setting for the Mahabalipuram Dance Festival, a month-long celebration of Indian dance.

There are more ancient wonders in the southern part of Mahabalipuram. Explore the astonishing Five Rathas, which are seventh-century temples all carved from individual large rocks. Just as astonishing is that the temples had been buried in the sand until 200 years ago, when the British unearthed them.

Another fine example of ancient art is Arjuna’s Penance, an extraordinary relief carving on two giant boulders. Look closely and see scenes from Hindu myth and South Indian daily life carved into the rocks.
