Anyone who has not stayed at a machiya should stay at one (especially for families and larger groups). Hatoba-an was superb. Machiya Residence Inn who manage the property were a pleasure to deal with and kept the house immaculate. The house itself was comfortable and offered free wi-fi, tv, washing machine etc. etc. It has a small garden which was nice to step into in an evening. The area was quite but only 5-10 minutes from Gion Corner/subway and walkable to Nishiku market and central Kyoto for shopping. A local Lawsons (for any food essentials) was only 100 yards away.
