This secluded bay, tucked away within the Kekaha Kai State Park, is one of the most picturesque in the region. Once one of Hawaii’s best-kept secrets, today the beach is beginning to rise in popularity, although it remains quieter than most of the beaches along the popular Ali'i Drive. The state park provides excellent hiking and lookouts, while the beach is home to beautiful marine life and great surfing. Come to Kua Bay prepared for the day, as you’ll want to spend several hours and the beach has no facilities. The beach is fairly small but there’s plenty of space to find a quiet patch of sand to settle in. Put on your snorkeling gear and dive into the tranquil water to meet the local sea life. Swim with Hawaiian sea turtles, the majestic creatures that inhabit this stretch of coast. Watch as dolphins play in the surf, and keep your eyes peeled for whales breaching out in the deeper water.In the cooler months the beach is a great spot for surfing as the winter swells roll in. Rent a surfboard from Kailua-Kona, where you’ll also find operators that run beginner surfing classes, when the conditions are right. Hike the trails that surround the beach to reach one of the lookouts above the shoreline. The trails are well maintained, and provide excellent views up and down the coastline. There is no water available at Kua Bay so be sure to bring your own, especially if you intend to hike during summer.Kua Bay can be reached by car via an unpaved road north of Kailua-Kona. Take the second turnoff to the Kekaha Kai State Park when heading north and continue through the park for approximately 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) until you reach the beach. (1,002 reviews) Absolutely loved this resort! The vibe was chill and inviting. The room we received upon checking in was not quite what we were expecting. Called down to ask for a room with a view that would match the description of the premium one bedroom suite that was described when booking. Within a half hour we were moved and the room was exactly as booked and provided an amazing view of the ocean and overlooked much of the resort. The room was very nice and comfortable for the four of us with the pull out sofa in the living room and two full bathrooms. The food was excellent and amenities were well maintained. Above all else the staff were amazing. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. We loved the options for shopping on the property and the gym was excellent. Overall very memorable experience and look forward to a return visit! (458 reviews) Overall, our accommodation was quite good! The room facilities were a bit outdated, and the bathroom sink was a little small for a family of three. Room B23 had a great view, overlooking the ocean, trees, and beach. The kitchen stove was convenient for preparing simple meals. The washing machine and dryer came with laundry detergent, which was very convenient for doing laundry – a real necessity in Hawaii! The beds were comfortable, and the sofa bed was also quite comfortable. The downsides: the housekeeper only cleaned the room once, and for the rest of the time, we had to request towels and other necessities from the office. There were some small cockroaches in the room, but I think this is unavoidable due to the climate of Hawaii. Reviewed on 29 Dec 2025 ### Popular places to visit ![#blue 50 Shades of Blue - Manini'owali Beach at Kua Bay, part of Kekaha Kai State Park, is another of the very pretty Hawaii Big Island beaches, with fine white sand that slopes gently to the beautiful clear turquoise water. The swimming here is awesome when the ocean is calm, and there can be some decent snorkeling along the rocky outcroppings at either end of the beach. During certain times of the year, particularly the summer months, the beautiful soft sand covers the entire beach from north to south. More lava rocks become exposed in the winter months as sand is carried out with the surf. Be aware of those rocks in the shallows when boogie boarding or body surfing. This is a good place to have water shoes to navigate across the rocks. Manini'owali Beach is one of the nicer Big Island beaches that is easy to reach from Kailua-Kona. You can practically drive right to the beach, and some days it seems everyone on the Big Island knows it! If you arrive later in the day, parking can be a little crazy, especially on weekends. As you approach the beach you may see cars lined up down the road. You may have to walk down the road a bit but don't worry; there's plenty of room on the beach! There is a rocky shoreline trail at the northern end of the beach that leads to another of our favorite Hawaii beaches, spectacular Kikaua Beach to the north.
