The food is simple and good, both at dinner and at breakfast. The forest trails near the hotel give travelers an alternative experience, and they can also see wild deer. The hotel is integrated with nature. It took most of the day to get to from Fukuoka. With bad storms, the local train service was temporarily cancelled. Given we had no car and the ground was very wet there was nothing to do but stay put. The hotel staff was very friendly and tried to help us navigate our journey back. The onsen experience was our first and was amazing. Overall the property is very dated and sleepy. Our room on the 3rd floor had a wonderful view, despite Sakurajima being mostly hidden for the 3 days we were there. Staff were all very helpful and friendly and many of them spoke a little bit of English. The kaiseki dinners provided an excellent variety but an english menu would have been helpful. We experienced 2 of the 4 private onsens available on site. There was no additional fee for this, but they book out very quickly, particularly in the evening. There is a toilet and shower in the room, but the hot water is very slow to arrive, so shower at the onsen's is the recommended option.
