"We booked here because they said we could charge an EV but when we went to use it it didn't have the right connections. It would be worth while to have the 3 types of outlets so that you can accommodate all EVs"

"It is a very grand hotel and we loved our big king room, overlooking the racecourse! We dinned in the restaurant, with the food being lovely! Fairly priced, good portions, and range of food on the menu! The hotel needs patronage - it is a diamond amongst many hotels to choose from. We will stay there again!"

"The hotel was nice a bit basic but clean and friendly staff. The continental breakfast was ok but for $20 you get what you paid for. There is an option for a cooked breakfast, which was made to order. Unfortunately the security lock didn't work on the door but had no real concerns, i never felt unsafe. The beds were comfortable so that's always a bonus. I think one of the biggest attributes to the hotel was the staff, in-particular the two ladies who helped & talked me through my options for things to do, sadly I can't remember their names. But they were both really helpful. Overall it was a nice hotel & a good location"

"Great stay ! The cabin was clean and comfortable with a good shower and toilet. Had basic cooking facilities including a microwave and fridge. Comfortable bed, although a little small for a couple. The pool area was well maintained and the big pool was long enough to do laps and warm enough in the winter to use. It’s handy to the Kaimais, Hobbit Town and there is a supermarket 6 minutes drive. Parking was supplied next to the cabin."

"Great place to stay. Comfortable beds and living area. Two bedrooms worked well for 4 of us. Great having 2 toilets (one in the bathroom) and one on it's own. Enjoyed the spa pool each evening. Shower nozzle wouldn't stay up but we managed a work around. Staff advised they would get this fixed. Would be helpful to have a few more utensils as very minimal if you wanted to try and make a meal e.g. serving bowls, extra sharp knife."

Alpin Motel & Conference Centre

Alpin Motel & Conference Centre

10/10 Excellent
"Perfect for families! We are super impressed staying at this little apartment. It was perfect for our families needs, very clean and tidy, the host was lovely and welcoming. It was spacious and had a great layout and it was so warm when we checked in, with extra heaters/cooling fans. The main living had a king single and a double pull out sofa bed. It has a well equipped kitchen. Then off the kitchen through the door is a mini hallway with closet space, iron and hair dryer + the bathroom. The bathroom had a heated toilet seat, shower with body wash, shampoo, conditioner, very hot water and great water pressure. Back into the closet area through another door is a queen bedroom and the spa area. I love that you have two doors to close off from the kitchen living area for those watching TV. It also has a communal laundry area on site. The spa was great way to rest after walking and taking in the sites. We normally stay at the Pullman or Millennium, but needed a different amenities and the apartment was more suitable with the kids to come and go. It was also very quiet considering it was fully occupied, we didn’t hear any of the guests."

"The rooms were very basic, for the price you can’t complain, A coat hanger would be good just too hang your coats up etc. The room coffee and tea making gear but no milk or fridge so black it is… The staff/reception lady was very helpful. We mixed up our arrival day and she managed to book us into another room for the night with no extra charge.. we booked through Expedia.. Would I stay again….. probably. The place was very close to the redwoods treetop walk which was handy and also close to some restaurants etc."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park?
The best area to stay when visiting Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park is typically around its fringes, with Tauranga and Rotorua being the most convenient and well-equipped towns.Tauranga, on the coast to the north-east of the park, offers a broader range of accommodation and amenities. Its city centre, particularly around The Strand, provides easy access to restaurants, shops, and the harbour. Mount Maunganui, a popular suburb just across the harbour bridge from central Tauranga, is known for its beautiful beach and the iconic Mauao mountain. This area is ideal for families and couples who appreciate a coastal setting with plenty of dining and activity options, including water sports and scenic walks. For those keen on geothermal attractions and cultural experiences alongside forest adventures, Rotorua, situated to the south-east of the park, is an excellent base. The central area around Fenton Street and the lakefront offers numerous hotels, many with their own thermal pools.
When is the best time to go to Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park?
The best time to visit Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park is typically during the drier months, from late spring through early autumn, which in New Zealand means November to April.During these months, the weather is generally warmer and there's less rainfall, making outdoor activities like hiking and exploring the park's natural features much more pleasant. You'll find the trails in better condition and the waterfalls, while still impressive, won't be as torrential as during the wetter periods. This period is ideal for those looking to spend full days exploring the park's walking tracks and enjoying the scenery without the disruption of heavy rain. For those planning longer walks or overnight stays, late summer (February to March) often offers the most consistent weather, with warm days and milder nights. This is a great time for experiencing the park's more extensive trails, such as the North South Track, as the conditions are generally stable for multi-day adventures.
