The Jardin Royal was created under the supervision of Louis Mondran in 1754 and remains one of the most popular green spaces in Toulouse. Set in the city centre between the River Garonne and the Canal du Midi, this peaceful enclave is located just to the west of the Museum de Toulouse and south of Saint-Etienne Cathedral. On its eastern edge a bridge carries visitors to the adjacent Grand Rond, with its central showpiece fountain, while the Jardin des Plantes – the oldest public park in Toulouse – is just across the road.
This is a prime Toulouse location, and hotels near Jardin Royal are much sought after. Use Expedia’s search tool to browse a range of places to stay, from good value two-star hotels in traditional redbrick townhouses to three-star apartment hotels, stylish four-star business hotels, and luxury five-star hotels with numerous amenities and stunning city views.
Staying so close to the park means easy access to its shady walkways, flat-lawned areas and two central duck ponds, making it an excellent choice for those travelling with children. A wonderful collection of trees includes magnolias, huge Lebanese cedars and the ancient Gingko biloba, or Maidenhair tree, the only survivor of a species group older than the dinosaurs.
Choose a hotel near Jardin Royal and you’ll be well placed to make the most of everything Toulouse has to offer. It’s only a ten-minute walk from the park to the Port Saint-Sauveur on the Canal du Midi, one of two canal ports in Toulouse. Here, you can start a walk along the towpath or a leisurely boat trip, or hire a bicycle from the VélôToulouse station immediately to the south.
For things to do in the evening, a number of cultural attractions lie nearby, including the Halle aux Grains classical music venue and the Théâtre National de Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées. And of course, the coffee shops, brasseries and wine bars of the Old Town are literally on your doorstep.
