Hvar Town is the top tourist spot on Croatia's Hvar island. Its popularity has boomed in recent years, taking it from a sleepy historic town to a lively summer holiday resort. However, Hvar has been careful to maintain an authentic feel and you'll find a good selection of accommodation here, including luxurious four-star hotels which appeal to visitors who leave their gleaming white yachts in the town's smart harbour, to traditional boutique-style hotels that are ideal for couples.
Those looking for cheap hotels in Hvar will be pleased to discover apartment-style accommodation offering budget stays for the young visitors – and those young at heart – who come for the lively nightlife. Many properties are located just outside the main town centre. The Aparthotel Pharia is one example of an affordable hotel in Hvar, with simple one- and two-bedroom apartments located a short walk from Momo Beach.
Back in the town centre, you'll find grander historic hotels in Hvar, such as the Riva Hvar Yacht Harbour Hotel, which offers a surprising contrast, with a modern high-end interior (think illuminated bars and cherry-red sinks) hidden within a 100-year-old building complete with shuttered windows.
At the centre of Hvar Town is its main square, which is headed by the pretty St Stephen's Cathedral and bell tower. In summer the square is a hive of activity, with tables and chairs lined up neatly along the cobblestones. Hotels near St Stephen's Square will also place you close to the nearby harbour, which has a promenade lined with bars, restaurants and hotels.
Hvar Fortress is another of the town's landmarks. This well-preserved hilltop fortress, complete with canon and dungeon prison, offers jaw-dropping views over the red rooftops of Hvar Town, the harbour and across the Adriatic to the Pakleni islands. Hotels near Hvar Fortress are also handily placed for the Grand Hvar government buildings that sit underneath it. Follow the harbour path towards Križna and you'll come to the old Franciscan monastery, which overlooks a tiny beach and bay.
Hvar doesn't have a huge list of prominent landmarks as the island is small and still determinedly underdeveloped. Holidays here run at a slower speed than your average sightseeing break, with visitors happy to wander the narrow streets flanked by old stone houses, discovering tiny beaches on the coast or heading inland to see the purple lavender fields – the ones at pretty Velo Grablje village are the closest to Hvar Town, and are just a 10-minute drive away. Activities on the water are also popular, with boat trips, island-hopping tours and watersports on offer.
Hvar's mix of olde worlde charm and upscale elegance makes it an incredibly romantic place for a holiday. From finding your favourite hidden beach, cove or cave to sipping cocktails overlooking the harbour or taking a private boat tour for two, this island is the perfect place to enjoy a summer escape with someone special.
Whether you go for a four-star resort or a smaller boutique-style hotel, the romantic hotels in Hvar are ideal for holiday love-ins. The Adriana Hvar Spa Hotel has a hot tub, terrace and massage tables with views over the harbour, as well as an indoor pool area with love seats for two and spacious sea-view suites.
If you prefer a boutique hotel in Hvar, the Boutique Apartments Seputic offers simpler accommodation in Hvar Town, but still provides equally impressive views from private terraces. These apartments are also a good option if you're looking for family-friendly hotels in Hvar, as they can sleep up to six guests.
In the atmospheric town centre, you'll find marina hotels in Hvar. Don't be put off if you're on a budget. While the cheapest accommodation tends to fan out away from the harbour, there are some central bargains to stay in, including Hostel Marinero, an adults-only hostel sitting right by the water, which provides accommodation for budget-conscious visitors in bright and airy bunkrooms.
Of course, at the other end of the scale, if you want to treat yourself to an extra special stay, you'll be spoilt for choice on the island. The Amfora Hvar Grand Beach Resort is one of the largest and most impressive hotels in Hvar Town. It's also one of the few hotels with a pool in Hvar, and guests can take a refreshing swim while looking out over the Adriatic Sea.
