The Norwegian mountain village of Høvringen is beautiful in all seasons. In winter, it offers the perfect destination for skiers, while in spring and summer, hikers and cyclists can enjoy hundreds of miles of well-marked trails right on their doorstep. Høvringen was originally one of Norway’s largest ‘setergrender’ or hill farms. Tourists first began to visit the area in the 1880s and today, visitors to Høvringen have direct access to one of Norway’s most beautiful national parks. Home to around 250,000 acres of pristine nature, you can hike from hut to hut or simply pack a tent and head into the wilderness, leaving the world behind for a while.
You are well-catered for on your tour of the national park – take a rest at Putten Seter, or perhaps enjoy a bite to eat at the Peer Gynt Cabin. The national park also includes many lakes that are suitable for swimming or fishing, as well as smaller peaks set in the dramatic landscape that has inspired many artists and writers. If you’re feeling energetic, why not attempt some of the higher peaks such as Rondeslottet and Storronden. Organised walking tours are also available, if you would rather be accompanied by an experienced guide.
The closest international airport to Høvringen is Oslo with connecting flights to other regional airports. However, many visitors choose to drive the 130 miles from Oslo. Høvringen is only 5 miles from the E6 motorway in Gudbrandsdalen and is easily accessible by both car and public transport. During the tourist season, a bus goes right to the village and in winter there is a direct bus from Oslo Airport.
