Harlingen is Friesland’s most important port and the starting point of ferries to Vlieland and Terschelling. It’s also a great place to charter a boat and explore the region’s canals and lakes. Enjoy the view and bypassing boats, wander through the centre or indulge in a little fishing.
If you’re visiting in August, be sure to catch the Harlinger Visserijdagen. This very popular event was named the Netherland’s best regional event in 2010, offering music, dance, fishing, history, carnival, military transport and markets – quite a mix.
The port is also a great place to walk around and watch ships pass. And since it is the most important port of the province, there is a lot to see.
If you want to visit Vlieland and Terschelling ferries leave from the port here. With plenty of natural beauty and miles of beach to be explore, a trip to the Walden Islands is certainly a must.
It’s an easy journey to the city centre from the port. There you can stroll through the shopping streets and visit attractions like the Hannemahuis, the old warehouses and check out the partly-intact defence structures – one for the history buffs.
Do you want to discover the nature and surroundings of Harlingen? Pay a visit to the beach or the Hegewiersterfjild: a nesting place of the godwit and peewit among others.
