The best areas to stay in Hachiman-Cho are around the ancient castle town centre and along the Yoshida River.

The historic centre of Hachiman-Cho, particularly the area around the Gujo Hachiman Castle and the town's waterways, is the most appealing for visitors. This area is very walkable, with narrow streets lined with traditional wooden buildings, some of which are over a hundred years old. You'll find many small shops selling local crafts and sweets, as well as traditional inns. The famous Sogi-sui spring, a source of pristine water, is also located here.

For couples looking for a romantic and culturally rich experience, staying in a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) within the historic centre is ideal. You'll be right amongst the charming streets, able to explore the castle and enjoy the evening illuminations along the canals easily. Many ryokans offer traditional Japanese dinners and breakfasts, providing a complete cultural experience.

Solo travellers who appreciate history and a relaxed pace will also find the historic centre a good fit. It's easy to navigate on foot, and there are many small museums and craft workshops to explore at your leisure.

The best time to go to Hachiman-Cho is during the summer months, particularly from mid-July to early September, if you wish to experience the Gujo Odori dance festival.

During this period, the town comes alive with the Gujo Odori, a traditional dance festival that takes place almost every night for over 30 days. This is a unique cultural experience that draws visitors from all over Japan and beyond. The dances are held in various locations throughout the town, often around the central streets near the Yoshida River.

For travellers interested in cultural immersion and a lively experience, this summer period is ideal. You can easily participate in the dances, which are open to everyone, and enjoy the town's festive atmosphere. Many local inns and guesthouses are well-placed for easy access to the festival venues.

If you prefer a quieter visit with pleasant weather for exploring, spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) are also excellent choices. The cherry blossoms in spring and the vibrant autumn foliage offer beautiful scenery, particularly around Gujo Hachiman Castle and along the riversides.
