Guatemala City

For an escape from the stresses of daily life, pack up your bags and head for Guatemala City.

This Central Highlands location has some 1,000,000 people.

Among the most magical family attractions are the Children's Museum and Mundo Petapa.

Take snapshots, enjoy the interpretive displays and learn about a range of animal habitats at the La Aurora Zoo. If you are pressed for time, find the information desk and take a map so you don't miss out on any of the key exhibits.

Amid a collection of gorgeous plant species, an afternoon spent at the Botanical Garden is sure to be a pleasant one.

On a fine day, pick up some lunch and make your way over to one of the area's scenic urban parks, such as Volcan de Fuego or Volcan de Agua. Central Park and Acatenango are two more nice places to while away a lazy day over a good book.

There's nothing like some time spent out among nature to help replenish a travel-weary soul. When you need to escape the concrete jungle, make your way over to Volcan de Pacaya.

Spend a day or two exploring some of the varied exhibition spaces in the area. Meander through the hallways as you check out the different displays at the Antigua Guatemala Colonial Art Museum and the Choco Museum. Nim Po't Traditional Textiles Center and the Old Textile Museum are also worth a visit.

Our natural world is a weird and wonderful place. If you tend to disagree, an afternoon spent at the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology and the Natural History Museum ought to be enough to convince you. The Casa Santo Domingo Museum also houses an intriguing range of specimens.

Add to your appreciation of the artistic drive, and perhaps even pick up something to take back home with you at one of the various gallery and exhibition spaces. Immerse yourself in the trendy atmopshere at the La Azotea Cultural Center and the National Museum of Modern Art. If you have time afterwards, the Popol Vuh Museum and the House of the Giants are also well worth checking out.

Step back through the ages with a trip to Kaminaljuyu or the Universidad del San Carlos de Guatemala, just two of the interesting historic sites here. When it comes to days of old, the stories are countless. The Santa Clara Convent and the Las Capuchinas Convent are two more great places to stop by.

Once the private domain of this region's ruling elite, today the gates to these most stately homes are open to visitors from all over the world. Head over and see what tales are housed at National Palace and Palace of the Captains-General.

Whether you're a spiritual person or not, you'll be sure to have a pleasant time at Catedral Metropolitana and La Merced Church. If you'd be interested to check out more religious sites, check for guided tours at Antigua Guatemala Cathedral and the Aldawa Mosque.

Public squares might be covered in bricks, tiles or grass, but the facades that surround them could be among the oldest or most modern in the city. Here, El Obelisco and Constitution Square are the most popular. A simple stroll around either is an enjoyable way to get your bearings.

Your trip wouldn't be complete if you didn't organize a visit to Hill of the Cross, one of the area's most distinctive landmarks.

To learn more about the history of this community, have some quiet moments at some of its special monuments and memorial plaques, such as the Torre del Reformador and the Santa Catalina Arch. If you'd like to continue your trip down memory lane, you can also check out Relief Map and Bank of Guatemala.

Do you want to see some of the region's best educational institutions? If so, be sure to check out the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala or the Francisco Marroquin University. The dynamic student populations and up-to-date facilities are just a couple of the reasons that these are such popular study destinations.

This area is well-known as a great shopping destination, so make sure you get your fix of retail therapy while you are here. Hunt for a sale, indulge a luxury purchase or just enjoy the atmosphere at Antigua Market and Handicraft Market. You're also sure to be impressed with the range at Jade Maya Factory and Museum and Oakland Mall.

The Teatro Nacional is one of the premier places to enjoy live performances. Head off well before showtime and have a few drinks with friends at one of the nearby eateries.

Whether you're staying in Guatemala City for business or pleasure, you won't regret a stop at Palace of Justice or Guatemala City Hall.
