![Gizeux (Indre-et-Loire) Le Château (Médiéval et Renaissance). Cité dans une charte du XIème siècle, le château est certainement alors une motte féodale construite en bois. Au XVème siècle, le château est fortifié en pierre avec tours, enceinte, remparts, donjon. Aux XVI ème et XVIIème siècles, la forteresse est transformée en château à vivre. En 1741, le château s'enrichi de communs qui peuvent recevoir 40 chevaux et de nombreux corps de métiers. La seigneurie de Gizeux a appartenu à la famille de Joachim du Bellay* de 1315 à 1660. Le château devint ensuite propriété des marquis de Gizeux de la famille de Contades. En 1789, lors de la Révolution française, le marquis, Louis Gabriel de Contades* (1759-1825), opposant aux révolutionnaires, doit fuir le sol de France et trouve refuge à Saint Domingue. Il ne reviendra à Gizeux qu'en 1801. Joachim du Bellay, né en 1522 à Liré, au château de la Turmelière, est orphelin de père et de mère avant l'âge de 10 ans. Il est confié en tutelle à son frère aîné René qui ne s'en occupe guère. De temps à autres, il quitte le château paternel de la Turmelière pour se rendre à Gizeux, propriété de la famille. Vers l'âge de 20 ans, Joachim du Bellay rencontrera Pierre de Ronsard dans une auberge des bords de Loire. Ronsard écrit des vers. Joachim lui avoue qu'il compose également des poèmes. Ronsard doit rentrer au collège de Coqueret à Paris, du Bellay décide de le suivre. Au collège, ils auront comme professeur Jean Dorat qui leur fait découvrir les auteurs antiques. Ronsard et du Bellay forment alors un groupe littéraire, d'abord appelé "la Brigade", puis à partir de 1153, "la Pléiade". En 1549, le groupe de la Pléiade décide de publier un manifeste qu'écrit du Bellay: Défense et illustration de la langue française. Du Bellay s'éteindra de maladie le 1er janvier 1560. Louis Gabriel de Contades, marquis de Gizeux, fit partie des émigrés lors de la Révolution. Il participera à l'armée des princes en 1792, aux côtés des armées étrangères liguées contre la Révolution. (De son côté, Chateaubriand, malgré son mépris pour les courtisans de l'ancien régime " Incapables et méchants, [...] nains politiques suivis d’une nuée famélique de laquais, de flatteurs, de comédiens et de maîtresses, [...] êtres d’un moment se hâtant de sucer le sang du misérable et s’abîmant bientôt devant une autre génération d’insectes aussi fugitive et dévorante que la première", hésitera à rejoindre l'émigration, mais finira pas s'y résoudre, appréciant peu Robespierre, Danton et Marat. Il rejoindra l'armée des Princes à Trèves). Louis Gabriel de Contades passa à Saint Domingues en 1794. Il y commanda une légion de l'armée royale a la solde de l'Angleterre. Depuis 1791, Saint Domingue, colonie française, est en insurrection contre l'esclavage. A paris, l'insurrection, aidée par les anglais et les espagnols, est d'abord perçue comme une révolte de type "vendéen". La République envoie dans l'île deux commissaires (Santhonax et Polverel) avec un corps expéditionnaire. Les commissaires se résignent en juin 1793 d'affranchir les esclaves fidèles à la République, puis Sonthonax décide un affranchissement général. En 1794, trois députés de Saint-Domingue gagnent Paris pour convaincre la Convention d'une abolition générale de l'esclavage. Ce sera chose faite par le décret du 6 pluviôse An II (4 février 1794). Certains planteurs n'hésitent alors pas à appeler les Anglais à leur secours. Louis Gabriel de Contades, marquis de Gizeux commandera une légion à la solde de l'Angleterre. En 1801, Bonaparte, sous la pression du lobby colonial, décidera d'envoyer une expédition à Saint-Domingue et en Guadeloupe pour reconquérir ces terres devenues de fait indépendantes. En 1802, Bonaparte rétablira l'esclavage. Le marquis de Gizeux fera une carrière sous l'Empire, il deviendra baron impérial, chambellan de l'Empereur, etc.. Il sera conseiller général d'Indre-et-Loire. "A good no nonsense place to stay. It has all the necessities you need and a huge amount of choice for breakfast. The gardens around the property are nice and the pool would be a real bonus in the summer. The staff are friendly and the propietor spoke excellent English and was a really helpfull nice chap. I was very glad I found this and would stay again if in the area. I didnt know how to rate the Eco freindlyness as i dont know that, so a mid 3stars. "
