Pocket Guide: Geneva

Welcome to Geneva

Ringed by the Alps and on the banks of both the Rhône and Arve rivers, elegant Geneva enjoys a prime location on Lake Geneva’s southwestern shore. Almost entirely surrounded by France, Switzerland’s second-largest city has held a key role on the world stage for decades. Geneva is most notably the European headquarters of the United Nations and is home to numerous international humanitarian organisations including Médecins Sans Frontières, the World Health Organization and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Visit Geneva

With around a third of the population originally from elsewhere, Geneva is one of the most cosmopolitan and outward-looking cities in Europe. Along with its status as a diplomacy and finance hub, there’s an emphasis on promoting cultural and artistic endeavours, so there are botanical gardens and watchmaking museums, contemporary art galleries and open-air spas to explore.

Geneva has an atmospheric old town, dozens of flower-filled parks and gardens, cobbled streets lined with pavement cafes and designer boutiques, and lakeside promenades ripe for an evening stroll.

Then there’s all that alpine scenery on Geneva’s doorstep – the lake itself with its landmark Jet d'Eau Fountain, the ski slopes of the Jura Alps on the French—Swiss border and Mont Blanc. You can get to Mont Blanc within an hour, but the best place to see it from is the summit of the Aiguille du Midi via a 20-minute cable-car ride from Chamonix in France.

Make your visit an unforgettable one, and spend some time exploring Geneva’s best-loved sights and neighbourhoods. Start at the Place du Bourg-de-Four in the centre of the Vieille-Ville (old town), then peel off into the side streets around Saint-Pierre Cathedral for an eclectic mix of fashion stores, tapas bars, luxury chocolatiers and a smattering of cosy pubs.

Alternatively, head across the Arve to Carouge, an Italian-influenced neighbourhood commonly referred to as the ‘Greenwich Village of Geneva’, or take a ‘mouette’ water taxi to admire the views as you criss-cross the lake between several points at the mouth of the Rhône.

Where to Stay in Geneva

Popular destinations in Geneva include the Quai du Mont Blanc lakeside promenade, with its mountain views, as well as the side streets leading back from the water, towards Geneva-Cornavin Railway Station and the Basilica Notre-Dame of Geneva. Here, you’ll find luxury grand old dames and more contemporary glass-fronted lakefront hotels, while the area closest to the station has more low-key choices, including big name international hotel chains.

For a change of scene, opt to stay in Geneva’s old town, where you’ll find everything from stately five-star palace hotels overlooking the lake to chic boutique hotels and cosy historic studio apartments with kitchenettes and sitting areas.

Whether you’re after a cheap Geneva hotel near the station for a quick overnight trip, or deluxe waterfront accommodation with period features and stunning views, use Expedia to find what you want. There are countless Geneva hotels to choose from, so you’re sure to find something to suit your needs.
