Benefitting from stunning views of Funchal and sea, rooms are large, light and luxurious and the surrounding gardens abundant with palm trees, camellias, scented climbers, avocado trees and dazzling bougainvillea. Like most traditional villas in Funchal, the house sits peacefully on the hillside on the Caminho do Monte below the famous wicker toboggan run, with breathtaking views over its own heated swimming pool to the town and bay of Funchal with sea beyond. Owner Joy, a Madeira resident for over 30 years, offers this villa to those wanting quiet surroundings, stunning views over the bay of Funchal and perfect location, where the famous Monte toboggan run ends. Large terraces in the spacious gardens and around the pool are ideal for sun worshippers or, should you prefer, there is plenty of shade from a variety of trees. The gardens/terraces are furnished with sun beds, chairs, tables, parasols and a Weber BBQ. A conservatory entrance leads to a dignified lounge and dining area, with open log fire for winter evenings and French windows opening on to the gardens and heated pool. The kitchen/breakfast room, with laundry room behind, leads to a BBQ area and shower/WC for use after swimming or sunbathing. Upstairs are 3 bedrooms; 1 double en-suite, 1 double and 1 twin and a second bathroom. The kitchen is fully equipped with a breakfast table for 6 and gas hob, electric oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and microwave oven, coffee machine, toaster, cafetière, plus crockery, cutlery, glassware and cooking/serving utensils. At the Eastern end of the garden in an elevated position is the Studio Annexe, for 2 additional people. Only rented with the main villa, it has its own separate entrance from the gardens. A living area with those superb views over Funchal is complemented by a kitchenette – ideal for preparing breakfast or a quick daytime snack. A king-size double bed and shower room completes this beautifully appointed studio. The Studio Annexe is only made available when the Quinta d'Alegria is occupied by more than 6 people; should a booking for less than 6 people wish to use the Annexe, the rental rate for 7 people will be applicable. Nearby Five minutes' walk from the villa is a bakery with café bar that makes fresh bread. There are a couple of simple restaurants within walking distance. Funchal centre and harbor is 3km (20 minutes walk downhill to Funchal (centre) but there is a regular bus service and the bus stop is just a few metres from the house. Madeira Some seven hundred kilometres west of the African coast, Madeira is a stunning mountainous emerald island, lapped by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. The first island to be discovered by the Portuguese navigators in 1419, Madeira became an important resting place on the long trip to the new world. Please note the access to both is narrow, and we would therefore recommend only small cars use these parking facilities. Cleaning The property is prepared for your arrival. For stays of longer than 7 nights, a change of linen and towels, and light mid-stay cleaning of bathrooms is provided on a day and time to be advised at check-in. All linen and towels are provided. For health reasons, linen for a baby cot is not provided and you should bring your own. Guests need to vacate the villa during a mid-stay clean and change of linen. Booking notes The rental value varies with the number of people occupying the property, so please ensure you enter the correct dates, number of adults, children and infants. Please note that supplements apply should additional people join you for any length of time. To secure your reservation we require a 30% deposit, or the full amount if you are arriving within 8 weeks. The balance is due 8 weeks prior to arrival. The children loved the pool and we all appreciated the views over Funchal. We were able to look down on the firework display from the Atlantic Festival which was on in Funchal during the week of our stay. Some of us completed the Levada Moinho and Levada Nova circuit and the high level mountain traverse between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo whilst others took part in dolphin and whale watching of the coast. Joy was at the villa to receive us, showed us around and made us feel very welcome. The villa itself is impressively well renovated, spacious, well furnished and full of history. The views of Funchal are fantastic. The amenities are excellent and we made use of the heated pool and BBQ. We had a car in order to explore, but Uber is operational on the island and is a very reasonable service. The drivers were more than happy to have a chat about the local area. Funchal is not the easiest city to drive around yourself, as the roads are very narrow! I’d highly recommend staying at Quinta D'Alegria. The whole family loved it. ##### Christian H. Close enough to Funchal centre to walk in down the very steep road and in a very quiet residential area. The bakery which is 5 minutes walk was a morning ritual for coffee and pastel de nata for breakfast. A mini supermarket only 15 minutes walk. The fridge and cleaning cupboards had a few supplies and a small supply of toiletpaper when we arrived which was a real bonus. Joy and her husband were delightful hosts - there if we needed their advice and good communication on arrival and departure. I would recommend this villa to everyone. ##### Angie Y. The Quinta does provide excellent accommodation for a family or large party although it would have been amazing to have had one extra bathroom, there is a shower room outside close to the pool but to have had an additional one inside for a large family would have been easier. Joy lived up to her name ...such a gracious host, beautiful food was home cooked for us and my fathers diet was catered for with the utmost care.The neighborhood is amazing, going for early morning walks can be fun with the cockerels crowing, they can not be heard in the villa though so no need to worry. The church on the hill bells the time but thankfully not through the night it was such a comforting sound through the day. the views are lovely and the butterflies are so big they are a sight to see. The Quinta sits about half-way downhill between Monte and Funchal city center, it is possible to sample life in Madeira as though you are a resident rather than a tourist. the pool and garden are superb and we also had breakfast and evening meals outdoors every day we were there. The town center is around a 30 minute downhill walk, We would recommend a car or taxi or bus back up it is steep. A car would be a bonus unless you simply want to relax at the Quinta. We swam in the Lava pools in Porto Moniz and you must go to the top of the mountain at Pico de Areeiro Fantastic choose a cloudy day and you are above the clouds quite stunning. Accessing the dual carriageway and the island highway network takes only a few minutes but the locals do drive fast so beware. Could I go there again YES, would I like to live there YES a truly wonderful holiday and I would recommend the Quinta to anyone... Couples on Honeymoon or families. ##### Deborah W. We cannot say enough about our stay at Quinta D'Alegria. We had a terrific experience. The home is better in person than on the internet, as you cannot feel the warmth through the pictures. Everything is clean and well maintained. The garden and pool were beautiful. The owner, Joy, and her maid, Cisteltina, treated us like family instead of paying house guests. The location is spectacular. You are right in the middle of the residential part of Funchal. However, the way the house is set on the side of the hill, you have complete privacy and a spectacular view. Although we left before the New Year's Eve fireworks, we thought it would probably be the best vantage point on the island to see them. We had a beautiful meal made for us our first night there. Despite it being Christmas and having her own family, Joy helped us in making reservations for Christmas Eve dinner and tuk tuks to see the Christmas lights, and printed out a recipe for the traditional pork in wine Christmas dish I asked about. In addition, for a mere 40 euros, Cisteltina made us a delicious dinner of the traditional salted cod in a wonderful caserole dish. This was waiting in the oven after a day of touring. We started the week with a car, but found the hills and narrow streets hard to manage. We ended up returning the car the first day. Taxis were easy to find and Joy gave us the number to the most affordable company. She also gave us the name of a wonderful woman, Terrese, who took us on a day long tour of the island for a very affordable price. Our favorite restaurant was Armazem de Salt. Great ambience and food. O'Classico was also very good. We were not as impressed with Riso. Although the ambiance was great, food was not. May have been due to serving a set menu on Christmas Eve, but all five us agreed that it was not a good meal. Le Jardin in old Funchal was also very good. Madeira itself is a beautiful place and a great combination of things to see, but not too much to see, so you can just relax and soak up the ambiance. The property was very clean but we had Problems with the local millipedes !!. Joy was very good and helped us a lot and organised a new oven as the existing one broke within 4 Hours. Not only was it superbly appointed but the attention to detail was much appreciated. The 'extras' in the kitchen, and bathrooms made our stay much more comfortable. To top it off the owner Joy and Celestina the housekeeper went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. The meals cooked for us by them were delicious and well worth it. The villa is positioned above the town and has fantastic views from the terrace. The garden is beautiful and well cared for and the swimming pool well maintained.
