About this property
Royal Shenandoah | 6BR Retreat w/ Hot Tub + 1789 Log Cabin + Game Room
Summary:
Welcome to Royal Shenandoah, where a preserved 1789 log cabin meets a spacious modern retreat. Set on three private acres in Front Royal, the home has six bedrooms across three levels, with warm gathering spaces, a hot tub, a fire pit, and game areas for families and groups. The name is a nod to the town itself, where the Shenandoah Valley opens up and Skyline Drive begins its climb into the park.
The space
Before you step inside, Royal Shenandoah tells its story: a preserved 1789 log cabin facade, a covered front porch, and a home expanded for modern gatherings on three private acres.
🍽️ Gather
The home opens into a bright farmhouse kitchen and dining area, stocked with cookware, bakeware, and serveware for everything from big breakfasts to holiday dinners. Stainless appliances, generous counter space, and a large island make it easy to cook together, and bar seating keeps everyone in the conversation. The dining area looks out over the yard, where deer and foxes turn up at dusk. Just beyond, the Great Room centers on a custom mantle and a 70-inch electric fireplace, with a 75-inch TV for movie nights.
🎬 Play
The Great Room opens into the original 1789 cabin, where hand-hewn timbers still carry the house's history. A custom game table sits at its center for late-night board games, and a reading loft above is the quiet seat in the house. In cooler months the propane fireplace keeps this part of the home especially warm. Downstairs, the game room and lounge give the group a second place to spread out.
🛏️ Rest
Six bedrooms across three levels. On the main level, the Primary King Suite has a king bed, full ensuite bath, and a TV, with no stairs to reach it. The second level holds three bedrooms: the Green Room with a king, and the Red and Blue Rooms with queens. On the lower level, the Second King Suite adds a king, a full ensuite bath, and a dedicated workspace, beside a Twin Room with two twin beds next to the entertainment space.
♨️ Unwind
Step out from the Great Room into the wide backyard, where a stone path leads to the hot tub and the propane fire pit is set up for s'mores. The covered porch has hanging chairs, a propane Blackstone griddle is ready for cookouts, and bocce ball and cornhole are out on the lawn. This is our favorite part of the property.
🍷 Explore
Skyline Drive and Skyline Caverns are ten minutes away, and Main Street Front Royal twelve. Buzzard Rock and Signal Knob trailheads and Reitano Vineyards are each about nine.
Guest access
The whole home is yours, all three levels and the three acres around it, including the covered porch, the hot tub, the fire pit, and the yard games. The garage and outdoor sheds are not included unless arranged before arrival.
Interaction with guests
We're typically available by text and happy to answer questions before or during your stay. We take a hands-off approach so you can enjoy your privacy, but we're responsive and glad to help if anything comes up.
The neighborhood
Royal Shenandoah sits on three private acres in Front Royal, sharing a short roadway with three nearby homes that are generally not visible from the cabin. It is a small residential pocket rather than a resort, a mix of full-time residents and vacation homes. Buzzard Rock and Signal Knob trailheads and Reitano Vineyards are each about nine minutes away, Skyline Drive and Skyline Caverns ten, and Main Street Front Royal twelve.
Getting around
A vehicle is needed here. The last stretch is a well-maintained gravel road and a driveway of about 500 feet, and the driveway holds five vehicles. Front Royal is twelve minutes for groceries, gas, and restaurants, and Skyline Drive is ten.
Other things to note
📕 Property Guide
After booking, guests receive a detailed digital property guide with local recommendations, including favorite wineries, restaurants, hiking trails, and nearby attractions. The guide also includes helpful property details and tips to make the most of your stay.
🚗 Vehicle Access & Parking
The property is accessed by a well maintained gravel road and driveway of about 500 feet. Most vehicles, including 2WD vehicles, can reach the cabin without issue. However, 4WD or AWD is recommended and may be required during snow or icy conditions. The driveway accommodates up to five vehicles.
📶 Connectivity
High-speed WiFi, around 600 Mbps, supports streaming, remote work, and video calls. The lower-level suite has a dedicated workspace. Cell service can be limited in the mountains, but WiFi calling keeps you connected. The home is equipped with smart TVs, and while standard cable is not available, guests are welcome to log into their own streaming accounts.
🐕 Pet Policy
Up to three dogs are welcome per stay, with a pet fee of $75 per dog. Please add them to your reservation so the fee applies automatically. Additional dogs may be considered case by case with an added fee. Service animals are always welcome, and we appreciate advance notice so we can notify our cleaning team. In Virginia, emotional support animals are treated as pets and subject to the same policies and fees.
🚼 Family-Friendly Amenities
Families will find helpful items for an easier stay, including two pack 'n plays, two full size freestanding high chairs, and children's tableware. Additional items may be available with advance notice.
🧯 Safety & Cleanliness
All bedding, linens, and quilts are freshly laundered between stays. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed throughout, with fire extinguishers on each level, plus flashlights and lanterns for the rare mountain power outage.
🦌 Wildlife & Surroundings
Royal Shenandoah is surrounded by nature, and it is common to see deer, rabbits, and even a pair of local box turtles in the garden beds. Black bears have also occasionally been seen in the area, so guests should avoid leaving food, trash, or scented items outdoors. While the home is carefully maintained, occasional insects may make their way inside, especially in a wooded setting. Please let us know if anything seems out of the ordinary. During warmer months, we ask guests to drive with care on nearby roads, as turtles and other wildlife often cross.
🏡 Privacy
Royal Shenandoah sits on three private acres, offering a peaceful and tucked-away setting surrounded by trees and landscaping. The property shares a short roadway with three nearby homes, though neighbors are generally not visible from the cabin. Because this is still part of a small residential community, guests may occasionally notice neighbors, pets, children, or others in the area. We ask that you help preserve the peaceful setting by keeping in mind that voices, music, and other noise can carry beyond the property, particularly when enjoying the outdoor spaces.
🧹 Property Care & Hot Tub
We continually improve Royal Shenandoah to enhance guest comfort. Furniture, décor, or small details may differ slightly from photos, but the overall quality and style remain consistent. The hot tub is open year-round and serviced regularly by a professional team. During your stay, our landscaping or hot tub care team may service the property as needed. These visits are brief, exterior only, and do not require interior access.
🔥 Fireplace & Griddle
The Great Room fireplace is electric and available year-round, with no wood to manage. The fireplace in the original cabin is propane. Outside, the fire pit and the Blackstone griddle are both propane.

This home had a lot of character and charm that also offered convenience and comfort. Plenty of space yet cozy, activities indoors and out to include tables games, fire pit and hot tub, remote feeling but only a few miles from town and, hospitality which met us with a basket of snacks, coffee pods, hot chocolate and creamer along with other amenities that made it a “must come back”! I would definitely recommend this property for any occasion.
Our group of family members, all seniors living in different states, chose this place to gather for our annual get together when we learned our Washington State sibling was going to attend the national sheepdog finals at nearby Belle Grove.
Matt is the best when it comes to communication ... he is fast, detailed, and pleasant to work with. Not that we needed much, the property was very well set up for hosting.
The home had a very well stocked kitchen (almost more pots and pans than you could count), a good island, and a large table that accommodated all of us easily. We cooked at home multiple times and it worked well.
A "must" for us is gathering spaces and we had that in the large "great room" as well as a large porch in front and another in back, perfect to different times of day. On this trip we didn't take advantage of the several game rooms, hot tub, and fire pit but nice to have the options.
There were full baths on each floor, two on the main floor; our ideal house would be everything on one floor (just about everyone has bad knees at this stage in our lives) but few of those exist and we made this work for us.
You are definitely in the country, but close enough to Front Royal and Strasburg for shopping, restaurants, and things to do (beyond going to the dogs).
Highly recommend!
This cabin was just what we needed. The location was quiet, but was really only a 10-minute drive from town. We were especially pleased with the way it was set up for children....lots of games and such that kept our 3 year-old occupied and our 1 year-old out of trouble. We had a bit of rain, but between showers we were able to make much use of the yard and lawn play items. Hot tub was perfect for after the little ones were in bed. Kitchen was thougtfully organized and even included plates/cups/silverware for the kids. Front Royal is a lovely town and is near lots of family recreational options.
Comfortable and nice layout for group of nine friends during extended wine tasting weekend. The kitchen was wonderfully stocked as we do most of our cooking on these types of outings. Communication with owner was timely and responsive. Even the wildlife (deer, woodchuck, bunnies, etc.) were fun to watch as we relaxed on the back porch. All-in-all, a fantastic place to stay in a beautiful part of Virginia.
My friends and I had a wonderful stay at this property. The house was incredibly clean, well stocked with necessities, and in a wonderful location. The house was very peaceful with beautiful views and outdoor amenities. The host was wonderful with communication and was quick to respond with any questions or concerns we had. I would recommend this beautiful home to anyone!
The house looked exactly as it did on-line. The beds were so very comfortable. Every single part of the property felt like home. Every person that stayed was comfortable and accommodated. The children were able to be kids and have fun and the adults had their own fun too.
The old house is such a neat part of the property, as well. It was integrated into the house perfectly.
Any time I ever had a question I would simply ask the owner and he would respond back immediately.
This house is very close to town, but yet secluded away from the world enough that you felt like one with nature. I actually live close by, but was unable to accommodate everyone. Rather than have everyone stay in separate hotels I decided to rent a place. I'm so glad I chose this place!!
I will be sure to refer people as well as use this home owner for any other get aways we will need in the future.

The exterior grounds are under construction. The porches are filthy and in need of a good cleaning. The interior looked clean but the floors and bathrooms need a good scrubbing. There are no cleaning supplies for the kitchen, floors or bathrooms. The 1st floor bed room has a bad odor. The bathrooms are dated and in dire need of a plumbing upgrade as there is no cold water in the second floor sink (valve broken) and there is very little hot water in any of the showers/tubs. The plumbing needs to be rebalanced as well as the HVAC. The basement and 1st floor bedroom were very cold when the 2nd floor rooms were extremely hot. The hot tub needed its water changed after a summer of sunscreen and oils the water was very cloudy and there was a ring of slimy material around the edge.Matt has done a great job decorating but, the mechanics of the house (plumbing and HVAC) need to be addressed. Matt is a very nice host and responds to text messages very quickly.
