As you approach Friendly Bear, look for the small stuffed bear cubs and quite large stuffed bear parents who welcome you to this souvenir shop and restaurant. Although the bears’ expressions are more frightening than friendly, the folks inside are gracious and inviting. Climb to the viewing area at the top of the building and look north to see the active volcano of Komagatake. Inside the building, look for the photos and drawings of insects, birds and wildlife that you might see in nearby Onuma Quasi-National Park. Have a snack of noodles, ice cream or more hearty fare in the dining room. The natural wood tables and chairs offer enough space to accommodate large groups. Tourist buses often stop here as part of trips to the national park. Mingle with other visitors as you try the Hokkaido specialty of grilled mutton or lamb known as Genghis Kahn. Rent bikes here for outings on the fairly flat road running parallel to the shoreline of Lake Onuma. The old-fashioned bikes have large baskets decorated with bear characters. Purchase picnic supplies to bring with you on a pleasant cycling journey. If you want to go all around the lake, plan for a ride of more than 6 miles (10 kilometers), crossing the Hakodate Line bridge separating the larger Lake Onuma from smaller Lake Konuma. Find Friendly Bear just opposite JR Onuma Koen Station. Drive here from Hokuto or Hakodate in about 40 minutes and use the private parking lot. Alternatively, ride the train from either city in just over 1 hour. From the shop and restaurant walk to the Tourist Information Center and entrance to Onuma Quasi-National Park. A brewery, several restaurants and boat rental services are also within a 2-minute walk. Be sure to allow time to enjoy the views and activities in the park.
