"Visiting Chena Hot Springs Resort is a truly unique Alaskan experience, located about a 1.5-hour drive from Fairbanks. While it offers memorable family-friendly activities, careful planning is required—especially regarding transportation and supplies.
Highlights & Family Activities
Aurora Ice Museum: A fantastic, one-of-a-kind family activity. Exploring the stunning ice sculptures is a must-do while you are here.
Natural Hot Springs: A wonderfully relaxing experience for adults (note that the natural rock lake is restricted to ages 18 and older, while families with children can enjoy the indoor heated pool).
Aurora & Sunset Tours: Excellent opportunities for viewing the Northern Lights, weather permitting.
Crucial Practical Tips for Travelers
Bring Your Own Water: Stock up on bottled water before driving out to Chena. Water on the property frequently sells out, and purchasing a small bottle at the resort can cost around $3.
Transportation & Car Rentals: Renting a car in Fairbanks is by far the most recommended option. While you might get lucky and find an Uber or Lyft driver willing to drop you off for around $90, do not rely on rideshare services or their "Reserve in Advance" feature for the return trip to Fairbanks. You likely will not secure a vehicle.
Return Shuttle & Cab Costs:
The resort offers return shuttles to Fairbanks for $90 per person, which can add up quickly for a family.
Alternatively, you can call a taxi service from Fairbanks to pick you up for rou"
"This stay was a surprise. It is off the beaten path nestled in the woods with neighboring homes with spacious lots. It is a modern building that looks like a modern home. It has gravel driveway. It has a self check in with a text to office/ staff for help if needed. They are responsive. Building is clean and provides slippers for the use inside.
The room is clean, has desk, reading chair and a spectacular viewing window that proved to be very useful for catching the northern loghts. The kitchen downstairs was packed with goodies and frig was packed with various options and frozen food and treats. Kitchen area has a large sitting table. All and all it was one of the memorable places we have stayed. I am glad we went and did see the northern lights. But the northern lights due to weather and nature are not always visable."

"Some of the staff was amazing, a couple of the staff would not be bothered by guests. When being picked up from the airport the driver rolled the window down and told us the back was unlocked."

"Restroom had extra extra towels! Rooms smelled good compared to others. It was clean and had a fridge and microwave. Showers were really clean and beds were super comfy and clean. No bed bugs, I checked both of my rooms. Excellent place to stay at and free breakfast"
"Setting aside the fact that we were thrilled and lucky to enjoy a spectacular northern lights show during our stay, Borealis Basecamp was a wonderful brief getaway experience. The facility has provided just enough extra activities (not a price bargain by any means, but probably comparable to similar venues) to keep you physically engaged during daylight hours. However, for those who have mobility issues, particularly back injuries, you'll need to make yourself cozy in the reception or adventure/cafe yerts and keep yourself occupied with a book or conversation with other guests, which is what my husband did. The food at the Pub and Latitude 65 restaurant was wonderful. Terrific coctails. Pay attention to the description of amenities provided in the igloos, which is what we opted for. Super comfortable bed offering a terrific view of the night sky. And finally, they make good on their promise to call your room at any hour when the aurora appears. One night between 9pm and 6am (roughly), we received 6 calls! But that's what you are paying for, and we were happy to have our sleep disturbed!"
