The George, Edinburgh, Scotland

Posted 27-Jul-2016
Pros: Completely sophisticated, but also felt completely local and timeless.
Location: National Gallery and public gardens just down the hill. Easy walk to the Castle. Completely central, yet quiet.
Centrally located hotel, charming, quirky and elegant. Thistles on all the tables in the lobby, warm and welcoming atmosphere, easy and walkable from Waverley train station. In the midst of the Georgian architecture of Edinburgh, a little gem of a hotel. Guest rooms tiny, but efficiently built. Ours had a window seat looking out over rooftops and toward the bay.

Nice Hotel in Center of Edinburgh

Posted 25-Jul-2016
Pros: Central location and room cleanliness
Cons: The Concierge position was covered by several staff persons. They were not well versed in where things were, distance and time.
Location: Location is this hotels strong point.
The Hotel was located very centrally which made seeing the city sites extremely easy. Quite simply you could walk anywhere. The breakfast was also a plus which friendly, attentive service. The Hotel staff was friendly and mostly helpful. The George is a big hotel which seemed to work well for the many large groups staying there.

Loved the whole experience!

We were upgraded to a deluxe room which was amazing! The coffee shop and bar is really top notch. The George is centrally located within walking distance of lots of neat shops and bars. Get the tram or bus from airport as they both stop near the hotel.

Fantastiskt läge mitt i Edinburgh. Nyrenoverat klassiskt hotell, men lite trånga opraktiska rum, speciellt med mycket bagage. Trevlig restaurang, bar och cafe.

Excellent Hotel with a great location very convenient to both the main hubs of Edinburgh. Also, many restaurants and shopping locations quite available within walking distance.

VERY disappointing experience

Posted 27-Jun-2016
Pros: The bed was comfortable
Cons: See above-pretty much everything-starting with management
Location: Near the university and many shops and restaurants
I researched this hotel on line after I could not get into the Howard which was booked-the rooms looked nice and the location was great. When we arrived we were given a room in an annex which was down a long corridor-down an elevator-down another corridor and a walk up two flights of stairs. The room smelled and we tried to get another room but were unsuccessful-they put fragrance machine in room which eventually cleared the smell. There was garbage in the corridor which was cleared after I complained. We went to the restaurant-where I had made a reservation based, again, on the website-it was noisy with drunks wandering all around-so we cancelled and found another spot .It looked nothing like the website presentation. When I called reception from the room there was no answer!!! Later I called for wake up and asked for coffee to be delivered-I got the wake up but no coffee-called room service and received promptly. I travel a lot and am pretty easygoing when it comes to accommodations-but this place needs to start over with new management as the experience was below sub par.

Good location but tiny room

Posted 18-Jun-2016
Pros: nice location in "new city" very good staff
Location: located on George Street near good restaurants and shopping
We spent one night at The George after spending 2 nights at their sister hotel Macdonald Holyrood. Although the George is rated 5 stars we found the Holyrood superior. Our room at the George was tiny-not really suitable for 2 people with luggage. It was also located in a tucked away corner of the ground floor. The breakfast buffet was impressive with a large assortment however, the layout was poorly designed. Twice we bumped into people on the buffet line because the seating area is too close to the buffet line. If you don't mind staying in "the old city" I would recommend their sister hotel.
