Dun Eochla is a remarkably well-preserved ancient stone fort on the island of Inishmore. The stone ring fort, built on the highest point of the island, has imposing stone walls, measuring some 15 feet in height and nine feet thick. Although some restorations have taken place on the fort over the course of history, it’s estimated to have been originally built between 550 and 800 AD. It’s thought that the fort was once home to an extended family and their animals that lived on the island, and many believe that it stands on the site of an even older fort.
The island of Inishmore, on which Dun Eochla stands, is one of the largest islands in the Aran Islands. The island is famous for the number of ancient relics situated on it and for the close preservation of Irish culture by its population, many of whom continue to speak Irish as their first language.
