Pocket Guide: Drenthe

Hotels @ Drenthe

Drenthe is a peaceful place with national parks, peatlands and heathlands where you can enjoy cycling and walking routes. But there is more! Discover the world of Dierenpark (zoo), Emmen, shop in the biggest mall of the Northern Netherlands, feel the adrenaline rush on the TT-Circuit Assen and be hear the heart-wrenching stories of Westerbork Transit Camp.

Assen

Assen, the capital of the province, is home of the biggest one-day sports event in the Netherlands: the TT-Circuit. In Assen you will find the statue of the most famous little boy in town: Bartje, a naughty kid from the books written by Anne de Vries which later became a hit TV series.

Dwingeloo

In 2012 Dwingeloo was named greenest village of Europe. One of its main attractions is Dwingelderveld National Park with the largest wet heathland of Western-Europe. Here’s a tip: watch the moon craters from up close with the optical telescope at the Planetron Cinedome – the view is stunning!

Westerbork

Westerbork is known for the historical transit camp, which was used during World War II to deport over 100,000 people to extermination camps, of which sadly only 5000 survived. The museum and monuments are in remembrance of this appalling period of history, in hope that stories of the former camp will prevent us from repeating the mistakes of the past.
