Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most) is a fairytale-like bridge that crosses the Ljubljanica River to the Old Town of Ljubljana. Stroll across the bridge, appreciate its craftsmanship and admire its decorative statues. The bridge opened to the public in 1901 and was originally known as the Jubilee Bridge of Emperor Franz Joseph I. It replaced an old wooden bridge and is one of Europe’s earliest examples of a reinforced concrete bridge. Take a moment to marvel at the bridge’s old-world charm. The design is the work of artists from the famous Vienna Secession. Note architectural features such as the arches and balustrades. Stand in the centre of the bridge and enjoy views in both directions along the peacefully flowing river. Perched atop pillars at both ends of the bridge are the sculptures of menacing-looking dragons, for which the bridge takes its present-day name. The dragon is part of the city’s coat of arms and symbolises bravery and strength. One legend states that the history of the dragon comes from the time when the Greek god Jason, along with his band of Argonauts, slayed a dragon while travelling between Ljubljana and Vrhnika. Look for additional dragon figurines that decorate the bridge’s streetlamps. Dragon Bridge is east of Ljubljana’s city centre, just a 10-minute walk from Congress Square via a picturesque riverfront pathway. Public buses stop at the bridge’s northern entrance. Walk to the city’s central train station in less than 15 minutes. Combine your time here with a visit to major attractions located in the city’s medieval Old Town. Shop at fresh produce, organic food and handicraft stalls at the riverfront Central Market. Gaze in awe at the lavish interior of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. (42 reviews) We stayed for five nights. Our arrival was miserable. We drove from Split. Our intention was to arrive by 8pm, but due to some delays, we arrived at 9:30pm. The reception had left at 9pm. The front door was locked. There was a note: call a local number to gain entry. Being from Canada, we tried to avoid costly cellular roaming fees and were travelling with data only (eSIM). So we couldn’t call the number. After trying to contact the property via Expedia (which failed), we finally enabled roaming (expensive), and were able to speak to the property and they talked us into locating keys in a lock box. The room we got was room 7…one of three attic rooms. We had to lug our suitcases way up to an attic level…the stairs were not lighted…and we finally, using the phone’s flashlight, were able to enter the room. This room was built between roof trusses and beams. To get into the beds required climbing over wooden beams while avoiding hitting one’s head on a slanted wall/ceiling. Accessing one bed required climbing under a steel rod while climbing over a wooden beam. Quite dangerous and not acceptable in terms of safety. We stayed in this room for the first night but insisted that we receive a better room. We moved into room 2, not an attic room, for the last four nights. Note…the photos of the attic room skillfully manage to conceal the hazards. The lower level room was much better.
