Deventer is one of the Dutch Hanseatic cities. It's located to the northeast of Apeldoorn and close to the German border. Walk around the centre, go shopping and discover the culture this city has to offer.
Deventer was mentioned as early as the 9th century when it was known as Daventre, making it one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. Because of its strategic location on the River IJssel which flowed into the Zuiderzee, today’s IJsselmeer (Lake IJssel), the city quickly grew into a major trade centre.
The De Waag museum at Brink, a late Gothic building from the 16th century which played an important role in trade is a must. The Speelgoedmuseum (Toy Museum) in the city centre is a great place to take the kids. And don’t forget to stroll through the winding alleys of Bergkwartier and take in the historic buildings.
For a panoramic view of the city and the River IJssel, climb the 46 m tower of the Grote of Lebuïnuskerk (Great Church or St. Lebuinus Church). And you simply can't leave Deventer without having shopped. You’ll find unique locally owned shops on Kleine and Grote Overstraat.
Nature lovers should head out to Ossenwaard or the somewhat farther national park De Sallandse Heuvelrug for some beautiful heath, woods and local flora and fauna.
Deventer is easy to explore on foot. If you want to alternate your city trip with some time out in nature, you can take the foot ferry from the centre of town to the other side of the River IJssel. Here you'll find Ossenwaard, a beautiful nature reserve with sandy beaches along the river. You can park free of charge here too if you decide to take the car rather than the foot ferry.
Deventer is centrally located and close to the A50 motorway, making it easy to reach by car and public transport from most Dutch cities. If you’re arriving in Amsterdam, for example, the train gets you to the centre of Deventer in just over an hour.
This lovely Hanseatic city on the River IJssel is a great weekend destination for two or the whole family.
