    Pocket Guide: Russia

Stretching from the eastern edges of Europe to North Korea, Russia is by some distance the largest country in the world. It occupies one eighth of the total land mass of the planet and incorporates countless cultures and peoples. From the grand old cities of St. Petersburg and Moscow to the vast permafrost of Siberia and Kamchatka Peninsula, it would take a lifetime and more to fully explore. With an incredible artistic, literary and musical tradition, unique architecture and a fascinating history, if you want to book a hotel in Russia, it’s going to involve a certain amount of narrowing down. After all, this is the country that includes ancient walled fortresses, forests the size of Germany and thousands of miles of arctic coastline.

Areas & Neighbourhoods: Where to Stay in Russia

St. Petersburg - Russia’s former capital and still the centre of arts and culture, the city is more or less one big open air museum. Perhaps the country’s most beautiful single destination, it’s well worth booking a hotel in St. Petersburg.

Moscow - The colossal capital and one of the world’s powerhouses and great urban areas, book a hotel here to visit the iconic Kremlin and discover a city coming to terms with its Communist past.

Siberia - The largest province of Russia, bigger than most other countries in the world. Siberia is a vast and pristine wilderness home to stunning lakes, lengthy rivers and the gateway to Asia.

The Urals - This mountainous area is rich in natural resources, making it one of the wealthiest parts of the country.

Kaliningrad - An enclave of Russia not attached to the main landmass but sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania. After the breakup of the USSR, this was Russia’s way of maintaining a foothold in the Baltic Sea.

Things to See with a Hotel in Russia

Start with the great cities of St Petersburg and Moscow but don’t ignore the (relatively) smaller gems of Irkutsk and Vladivostok. The latter is the endpoint of Russia’s huge Trans-Siberian Railway and located much closer to Tokyo than it is Moscow. Volgograd and Sochi, Russia’s Black Sea holiday resort and Winter Olympic host city, are also worth exploring. Siberia’s Lake Baikal is both the world’s deepest and largest and a must for travellers who love the great outdoors. Learn more about Russia’s incredible history, not least the Revolution that happened here in the early 20th century that changed the course of world history.

    Things to Do in Russia

Russia is home to a number of the world’s best and most famous museums. Take in the stunning works in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, with its collection amassed by the former royal family. Moscow’s museums are equally impressive, including the Tretyakov Gallery and Pushkin Museum. Take in a performance at the majestic Bolshoi Theatre or catch the Trans-Siberia Railway all the way across a continent to Vladivostok. If you’re really in the mood to explore, head to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of almost 200,000 people that is not accessible by any roads. Just knowing where to start in Russia can be tricky.

    "Well looked after"
We were a very assorted party - one of us using a mobility scooter and another being only 6 months old - and the hotel staff were very sensitive to our needs and eager to help. The hotel serves very good cocktails in the panoramic restaurant at the top of the hotel.

    "A good hotel....but 5 stars? "
For the most part, this hotel meets the requirement of a 5 star hotel with some shortcomings: staff was unaware of construction starting at 8am in the morning, which obviously was very disruptive. The fitness center is in a desperate need of an upgrade. It's just a room with few outdated machines in it. The fitness sauna and showers were lacking. There was no cold water, so unless you wanted to get scolded, you couldn't take a shower. All that being said, the staff was amazingly friendly. And all spoke English. If they struggled with understanding, they apologized and found someone who could.

"Very Nice .. Important to read"
I would like to start my review by denying all other negative comments that talk about dirty rooms and dirty atmosphere .. My general comments about my stay ( 5 nights x 3 suite rooms ) there is : 1) great building .. very nice lobby 2) reception staff were tough and never smile especially the old aged ladies .. not once .. everytime 3) rooms was nice .. clean .. homemade staff very nice 4) alot of bars and restaurants inside .. club .. karaoke.. bet club .. which means you don't need to go out of hotel sometimes 5) I pay alot for parking my car while I had 3 suites reserved .. we shouldn't pay for parking .. or at least lower the price .. I don't need to pay everytime I go out .. one fixed price for all day 6) moscow is full of beautiful girls .. and if you are there girls will be friendly to you and try to talk to you and some of them for sex and that's not only in this hotel .. it's everywhere .. but management control it in a very good way that they don't allow them to pass security line to guest rooms unless you want it 7) machines for snacks and drinks everywhere in floors . So in general am very satisfied but I wish they can fix my negative comments especially reception should always smile whatever the customer need .. and the parking Goodluck

    "Birthday Spent!"
I came there to enjoy my birthday and see Russia from within instead of without...political agendas aside, the people were GREAT!!! Kind, helpful and seemingly happy people. I am grateful for this opportunity and plan on another trip in the future...ON MOTORBIKE! :-) I will be back another time. The hotel I stayed in was old but elegant. Staff were always willing to help how ever they could. Loved the experience.
