The ancient island of Malta is a beautiful, sun-kissed place, with tranquil sands and some of Europe’s best, and quietest, diving and snorkelling spots. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a beach getaway with a side order of culture, thanks to its thrilling capital city and rich historical heritage.
Book a hire car in Malta and you can go anywhere, whether you want to marvel at the architecture in the capital, Valletta, delve into the past at the Hypogeum, or simply kick back and relax on those gorgeous, unspoilt beaches.
Most visitors to Malta will fly into Malta International Airport, just outside of Valletta. Pick up your hire car here and you’ll be able to enjoy a short trip to pretty much anywhere on the main island – Malta measures about 17 miles end to end, so you can get almost anywhere within 40 minutes.
Book a rental car in Malta and you’ll be able to choose from a wealth of trusted brands, including Avis, Budget and Europcar. There’s plenty of choice of model too, whether you want to cruise the beachside roads in a convertible or need a van big enough for a couple of surfboards.
Because Malta is so compact, it’s easy to see a lot in a short time. Start off in Valletta, just 20 minutes from Malta International Airport. The ancient city was built by the Knights of St John in the 16th century, and it’s tiny, measuring less than a mile in each direction. There’s lots to see and do though, with the architectural masterpiece that is St John’s Co-Cathedral the prime attraction.
If the 500 year-old building is a little modern for your tastes, set a course for the nearby Hal Salflieni Hypogeum. This antediluvian mausoleum dates back to at least 3000 BC and was used by the ancient Maltese to bury their dead. You’ll need to book ahead to secure a spot on the tour, but you won’t regret it.
Not quite enough history for you? Take the 30-minute ferry to Ghawdex (known as Gozo in English). The millennia-old Ġgantija Temples are just 10 minutes from the ferry terminal by hire car, and do a great job of bringing the past to life to life, with exhibits, tours and walkthroughs of the ancient temples.
Unlike most of Europe, Malta drives on the left – though watch out for drivers occasionally crossing to the right to avoid potholes. There are no real motorways on the island, so progress can occasionally be a little slow, but that just adds to the charm. When you’re surrounded by scenery this beautiful, what’s the hurry?
