Eugene is a city in Oregon, in the Pacific Northwest region of the US. Situated just south of the Williamette Valley wine region, this green and scenic city is known for its artsy, outdoor-loving, alternative culture. It’s also a great location for visiting nearby destinations by hire car, such as Portland,Salem,Albany and Corvallis.
If you’re arriving via Eugene Airport then it’s a 10-mile drive by rental car to Eugene. En route you could take a detour to visit Fern Ridge Lake, a beautiful reservoir on the Long Tom river and a popular place to go boating. It also includes the Fern Ridge Wildlife Area.
There are various hire car providers to suit your budget and preferences, including Budget, Hertz and Alamo. Many offer extras like free cancellation, unlimited mileage and zero excess collision cover.
There’s plenty to enjoy in Eugene, including a range of outdoor activities, a lively arts scene, a variety of good restaurants and some really great craft coffee. Key attractions include the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, the University of Oregon Museum of Natural and Cultural History, and the rainbow-fronted Science Factory Children's Museum & Planetarium. The city is also known for its various festivals and fairs, including the Oregon County Fair. You can also hike up nearby Spencer Butte for a breathtaking view of the city.
Corvallis, in Oregon’s Benton County wine region, is a 47-mile drive from Eugene by rental car. Like Eugene, it’s situated on the Williamette river, and is a vibrant university city with an artsy vibe. Key attractions include the city’s scenic riverfront walks, the Majestic Theatre, the Whiteside Theatre, and the Arts Centre. There’s also a variety of charming cafes and restaurants to enjoy, plus historic architecture. Key events include Da Vinci Days, a music, arts and science festival, and the Corvallis Fall Festival, which celebrates local artists.
Portland, is a 110-mile journey away. Situated near the foot of Mount Hood, it’s the biggest city in Oregon and is known for its distinctly offbeat atmosphere, picturesque streets, and fabulous restaurant scene. Portland also has more parks than anywhere else in the US. Key attractions include the 400-acre Washington Park, which boasts a rose garden, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, which includes a planetarium, the hauntingly atmospheric Cathedral Park, and Oregon Zoo. Of course, this is Portland, so there are many quirky attractions on offer too, including the disorientating Duplicative Forest, the Hat Museum, the Kidd’s Toy Museum, the 24 Hour Church of Elvis, and the tiny Mills End Park, the world’s smallest park.
Due to its mountains, valleys, rivers and forests, Oregon is incredibly scenic to drive through. Take care on mountainous and winding roads, especially in winter. The US is right-hand drive and remember to keep an eye on your mirror, as drivers don’t always indicate a direction change. Every state has different driving laws, so make sure you familiarise yourself with the Oregon ones before your visit.
