Why rent a car in El Paso ?

The city of El Paso sits on the border between Texas and Mexico. It has big city shopping and nightlife, but it’s the outskirts that really make this area sing. The Keystone heritage park and Franklin mountains form the backdrop to El Paso, and further afield the Organ Mountains are the land of Western folklore, where Billy the Kid and Geronimo once roamed. In between are wineries and pistachio ranches and lush Alabama scenery, so get a hire car in El Paso and explore them all.

How to get to and around El Paso ?

Fly in to El Paso International Airport, which is seven miles to the east of the city next to the Biggs Army Airfield. If you are arriving by car then the I-10 runs past El Paso and east towards New Orleans or west to Phoenix, Arizona.

What brands are available?

If you plan to hire a rental car in El Paso try Green Motion, Hertz or Ace Rent A Car; all have local collection points. Alamo, Dollar and Avis also have branches at El Paso Airport.

Must-sees within an easy drive of El Paso

El Paso’s neighbouring city of Ciudad Juarez once had a dubious reputation, but recent years have seen a dramatic transformation and safety standards have improved. The city has four international ports of entry connecting it to El Paso - the Bridge of the Americas, Ysleta International Bridge, Paso del Norte Bridge, and Stanton Street Bridge. This is an industrial city with a difficult past, but the surrounding areas boast sand dunes with huge spiky cacti and vast lunar expanses.

The Organ Mountains sit 50 miles north of El Paso and surround the city of Las Cruces. This is Billy the Kid country - the famed Western outlaw apparently hid in these mountains and caves. There are numerous opportunities for hiking and camping in the area and the nearby White Sands national monument has dunes, cycling and stunning views. About 60 miles north of Las Cruces, off I-25, is Spaceport America, a futuristic-looking building which is the first purpose-built commercial port for space tourism. There is a visitor centre in the nearby Truth or Consequences district. On the same topic, the New Mexico Museum of Space History is in the city of Alamogordo, 90 miles from El Paso and a drive of one hour and 20 minutes, just on the east side of White Sands. Alamogordo is also home to Pistachioland, a ranch and winery that hosts visitor tours and tastings.

The city of Socorro in Texas is 16 miles southeast of El Paso, along the border with Mexico on the north bank of the Rio Grande. The neighbouring towns of San Elizario and Morning Glory are also possible stop-off points for travellers looking for a taste of authentic local life.

Tips and tricks for driving in El Paso

If you plan on driving to Mexico check with your hire car company that you are insured to drive across the border. Also be prepared with passports and ID documents for border checks.
